Rmanufactured alternator - Bosch vs OE?

Had my alternator go at the track this weekend, luckily found another M3 owner that had a spare one. Swapped out in and got back on track (I love how friendly people at the track are).

His was a remanufactured Bosch, which I’ve read bad things about and the advice is to stick with OE. However when I go to FCP’s site new OE is out of production, and the OE option says remanufactured Valeo, which is the same as what it says under the Bosch. So wondering if there really is a difference now, the OE is twice the price?

When I needed one I went Valeo from Bimmerworld based on all the negative feedback around Bosch. Would have preferred FCP, but alas they didn't have em.

At $300 for BNIB Valeo, it's not worth getting a refurb.

Yep brand new Valeo would he my pick. I put one in about 4 or 5 years ago replacing the factory Valeo which had an open circuit rotor.

I went with the reman Bosch on mine before seeing all the negative feedback. It's been close to 2 years at this point with absolutely no issues though.

I’ve seen a couple of Bosch rebuilds that had worn brushes, looks like they didn’t replace the regulator.

If you can get an OEM reman then it comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Valeo is probably your best bet. I’d check the regulator first. I’d also look at the alternator that went bad - probably a worn out regulator.

Ordered the Valeo, get to do it all over again. Will keep the Bosch as a spare.

I installed a new Valeo unit recently. I kept my Original Valeo unit that was from the factory. Plan to swap the VRM if this brand new Valeo ever shits the bed.

I currently have a new Valeo alternator in my car after the rebuilt Bosch one gave up the ghost. I've since got the Bosch unit replaced (lifetime warranty) so now I have a spare.

...wait what's going on with remanufactured Bosch alternators? I put one in 20k ago and it's been fine, I never read anything on them being bad - what did I miss? 😅

The reman'd units are hit and miss. Looks like you got a good one. Some have had to go through 3 before getting a goos reman unit.

Do you happen to have any other information on why these alternators might be failing? Also, could you tell me what are the common symptoms that I should be looking out for? This is the first time I'm reading about it and now it's made me nervous haha

Poor quality control during the rebuilding process? Poor quality parts used during the rebuild? Anyone's guess.

If you notice low voltage while engine is running that would be cause for concern.

I've had my Bosch reman for a few years now. Last time this was brought up, someone mentioned they either fail pretty quickly or last a while. I wouldn't be too nervous about it if I were you.
