    Help on engine mount change?

Quick question - why do I need to remove the engine driven fan? As long as the fan shroud is loose and can move up a bit as I raise the engine, shouldn’t I be ok?

I watched the FCP video and they remove the whole fan, but I don’t have the tool right now and wondering if I can get around this. Thanks.

That should be fine, but the 32mm wrench is an essential tool when owning a S54 with the stock mechanical fan. A long screw driver can be used in place of the special water pump holder tool to hold the water pump bolts as you loosen the fan. If the fan has come off recently, then all that is needed is the 32mm wrench.

When I replaced my motor mounts, raising the motor didn’t give me enough room to install the new mounts. I had to lower the subframe a little to gain enough clearance.

I use a 32mm no-name wrench, but any e46 fan clutch tool set will work or 32mm wrench.

I couldn't get the motor high enough when (carefully) jacking from the oil pan, but ended up getting an engine support bar that provided enough clearance.

I used a support bar. No luck.

Lowering the subframe makes life much easier.

You can do it by lifting the engine. You have to place the jack more on the left side and then more on the right side to do each side. that way you maximize clearance. If you jack the motor from the center then you wont get enough clearance. I have swapped mounts just like this on both my E46 and Z4. use a 2x4 and also be careful with the heater hoses on the back of the motor

Agree with Maxima, just finished this. FCP video discusses this. And all I did was loosen the fan shroud, left the fan connected. thanks for all the help.

I did break this, power steering hose bracket. Can anyone help me with a part number for the rubber piece that broke?

I did the same thing when changing my mounts. Fortunately I was also doing my power steering lines at the time, the new hoses came with a new isolator. PN/link for the isolator is below:

Getting the old mounts is easier since that requires less vertical room because your old mounts are deformed/compressed. You need more room to clear the studs on the new ones.

If you can't get the engine high enough and start forcing it, just remember that the bell housing starts interfering with the tunnel and there are hoses and wires there that you could pinch. Also, you will be stressing/stretching the transmission mounts.

Easier way is to get a piece of wood on top of a jack and place under each side of the engine and lift by the engine mount arm, doing one side at a time.

Do what fcp video suggest. A few more steps but hazzle free. I tried rising the engine and could not get the new mounts in.

I didn't have to loosen the fan or have a support bar at the time, but I did what Maxima said and it worked.

At what mileage do you change the OE mounts or do you guys just look if the oil pan is too close to the sway bar?

                              Thanks for the part number.
