    Die Wethje CSL Airbox Prototype

Came across this Die Wethje prototype single-piece CSL intake for sale. I haven't seen this one before, which is single piece and has a removable panel for insertion of the filter. Interesting to see another element of the prototyping that went into developing the end product. 3000 EUR for anyone who collects such things.

(Not associated with seller and posting in general forum because I hadn't come across this before and believe it has informational value for the forum)

Interesting find, definitely can say I've never seen this before. Makes you wonder what other low volume parts are out there for this platform in other countries we've never seen before.

My (2001) Die Wethje box is also slightly different than the final OE box, interestingly-- but not in a fun way.

Early CF Airboxes could also be from the racecar program. They were used on the GT car with the P54 engine before they introduced the GTR with P60. Die Wethje was the supplier of many carbon parts for BMW Motorsport.

I have seen this listing before. The issue with these early airboxes, that were made in small numbers, is finding the filter element. It would make nice wall art if you wanted to drill holes in a wall for a set of S54 ITBs and mount it like that.

This airbox resembles the E36 Gruppe A airbox with the top load air filter. From what I can tell, Die Wethje redesigned the throttle body side to work on the S54 rather than the S50.

Quoting this for E36 appreciation. Check out Jim’s build on the other Mforum if you like this kind of thing, it’s truly next level.

Ah thanks for sharing this - yes you can certainly see the lineage of that prototype! Very cool!

That’s badass, BimmerWorld offers an air box like that, special order only.

Anyone know if someone makes an e36 air box similar to the Gruppe A piece but for S54 swapped cars?

In terms of the style / the bumper inlet? To be honest, I don't think anyone really does.

Could try Goke, but they don't have any with the bumper inlet, and I'm not quite sure their S54 boxes are compatible in E36s.

And KK's boxes fit the e36, but only resembles the Gruppe A box so much.

Right on. I’m toying with S54 swapping my 99 M3 if/when the S52 goes. I have a KK-Automobile hood for my e46, the quality is good and I would for sure consider one of their airboxes. I would want to see how that vent works with the radiator, and if things would get too hot.

It'd probably be too much, in terms of cost, and may not be worth it. If im not mistaken you'll likely have to run a different radiator that is thicker and isn't as tall, as seen in the picture, allowing you to have a straight pass through.
                          (E46 for context)

But, KK might have a snout, if you will, that doesn't go through the front kidneys, as seen here.
Yes it is an e30 w an S54, but it's just for context

But at a certain point the cost vs gain is only so much and then it sort of becomes the question of am I just doing it to be differenet and having something others don't lol.

Here's another angle (screenshot from one of their videos)

Another option is to do what Pavlo did and 3d print a block off plate in the airbox and run intake tubes through the bumper ducts.

You don't have to run a different radiator. But you will have to tilt the radiator & oil cooler so the angle creates enough space up top for the intake.
As can be seen on the pictures it's not mounted straight but at an angle. Works fine.
