Snap On Techangle Torque Wrench Calibration

I know a bunch of us have a Snap On Techangle so figured I would post this info here. For those that are shopping, a used Snap on Techangle is a pretty good deal, usually about 50% off MSRP, but you will want to get it calibrated.

To get your Techangle calbrated, call 877-762-7664. Have the model # and preferably the serial #. Snap on will send a UPS label and you ship it to them. About 1-2 week turnaround. Cost is $130 to inspect, calibrate and fix any minor issues.

Not sure if they do non-snap on torque wrenches. You can search "metrology" and find a place local to you.

Good post. I have all of my torque wrenches calibrated every other year due to track use. Local shop just does calibration of everything under the sun (tools, electronics) and does it inexpensively ($150 = ouch).

If you haven't had it calibrated recently - you don't know what value you're torquing fasteners to.

I need a 1/2" techangle as it's much better for rod bearing bolts than the 3/8" I currently have at home. I have been borrowing the 1/2" from work when needed. I may go the used route on the 1/2" as these are about $800.

The SnapOn guy that comes to the shop I'm at will do calibrations for free in the truck fwiw.

The snap on trucks near me all don’t have the tool to calibrate which sucks. I don’t mind paying. It’s also worth having it inspected and anything minor fixed.

Yes, this is more of a time service interval vs per use. I think most are spring loaded so the calibration accounts for wear in the spring. Storing the torque wrench at its minimum setting will help extend that interval.

I've observed most leave it at the last setting. If you buy a used one, get it calibrated. Mine wasn't far off when I bought it but it did need a calibration.

Years ago I attended a 3 day snap on course on torque products. One of the engineers who designed the torque angles stopped by on the last day to chat and I asked how often they should be calibrated. He said that if you aren’t required to calibrate the wrench due to job requirements, and you treat the wrench well (don’t drop it, throw it around, etc…) it probably wouldn’t need to be recalibrated.
i have a 1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2” that I’ve owned for over a decade with thousands of pulls on each and they still land within 2% tolerance according to the $1800 snap on torque wrench checker.
These aren’t typical click type wrenches. There are no moving parts. Only a stain gage in the body. So nothing will wear out if treated well.
But with that said, if you buy a used one, I would definitely send it in for calibration.

Thanks. Wasn't sure how the digital ones worked but that helps to clarify that. My techangle is having an issue of shutting off and turning back on which is why I'm sending it in. The $130 takes care of any minor issues. I'm pretty sure it's the spring on the battery cover but I want to be sure.

I know this sounds crazy, but try changing the batteries. My 3/8” was doing that and the low battery indicator wasn’t showing up on the screen. Just on a hunch I swapped out the batteries and it immediately stopped doing that.

I had this issue with my Techangle, it turned out the solder broke near the battery cap. A dab of solder and it's fine again. Now I avoid touching the battery cap when using it.

Edit to add it wasn't the cap itself, but rather the metal strip from inside the battery compartment that leads to the contact points for the cap.
