    What’s Up NAM3F - E46M to G82M

    What’s Up NAM3F?
For those of us who were around a zillion years ago, and rubbing two sticks to create fire and hunting woolly mammoths for meat instead of buying a grass fed beef steak from the supermarket, the time has FINALLY come. I finally get to post a what’s up post! The first M3 I’ve ever owned, that chapter is now closed after 18 years of ownership, and some 216,000 miles. Saying goodbye to an old war horse was tough, but a new war horse, one with twin turbos, is now pressed into service!
I just got this Saturday morning, I bought a 2023 G82 M4. I caught the Amtrak out of Union Train Station in the LAX Airport vicinity at 10:00 pm on a Friday night, arrived in Tucson, AZ at 7:30 am on Saturday morning, got picked up by a Tucson BMW Dealership sales-staff member, and by 11:00 am, all paperwork was completed, and I was headed back to Orange County in sunny Southern California. So, here is my “new” used car, a 2023 G82 M4 with a carbon roof and a good-old 6 speed manual transmission. My “New Blue Bomber” had 11,300 miles on the clock when I bought her. She is a beauty, at least in the eye of this beholder.
Well fellas, I don’t hang around on this forum much anymore like I used to. Since NAM3F was born from the ashes of old M3F way-way back in the day when the E46 M3 first hit the market, that was a great place to hang out and burn time with other gear head nerds who had 10w-60 weight motor oil coursing through their circulatory system. Alright fellas, you be good, be good to one another, and who knows, we might cross paths again one day. This is Speed Monkey, signing off….

Out of curiosity, what made you go with the M4 over the M2? I always thought if I was ever in the market for a new BMW I'd go with the M2, though I'd prefer a previous gen M2 CS over a current M2 (just wish I could get one with an S58) based on looks alone.

I’m curious as well. I’ve never driven any of the G8x. But I’ve owned F80/82/87. After having driven my E46 for a few days now, the driving feel is so perfect with the right amount of power. They don’t make cars like they used to.

          OP, congrats on the G82!

Congrats! As some of the others have said, as long as it makes you happy.

IMO the car is very ugly, especially compared to E46M. But I have no doubt it's very fast and it seems like that's what you're after. Props for sticking with MT...

These G8X M3/M4's are a catch 22 at the moment. I 100% agree that the front end is disgusting, it's way too big, and way too heavy. They are never going to give you the e46 m3 experience but in terms of speed and acceleration, my god, no other BMW is coming close.

The one to buy at this moment is the Competition AWD version. They are doing some insane things in terms of making power out of the s58. Spending less then $5000 is getting 800-900hp out of these while proving to be reliable for once. This is the bargain of the century. The s58 is just starting to scratch the surface on potential and the gains are extraordinary. Spend some more money and the s58 is easily getting over 1000whp. There is one running 7.9x seconds in the 1/4 mile now which is mind boggling. You can essentially have a car that can take on any other car on the road that is 2x-3x-4x more in price. I guess it's BMW's proper send off of the complete ICE before we get that hybrid crap.

I agree. Outright speed, G8x cars are impressive. And the few people I know who track these cars, I believe they do very well on track, for as heavy as they are.

After these cars being out for awhile now, I think the car is a great design. The front end isn't that bad. Seems like they were inspired by the 2002 and increased the size of the grill to 2024 American standards haha

These are contradictory statements. A design cannot simultaneously be “great” and also have a huge portion of it be “not that bad.” At the risk of beating a dead horse, let’s just say the G8X is not the best looking car, nor is it the absolute worst. It is definitely, a car. That much is certain.

The G8x is BMWs Pontiac Asstech.

There are G8x running in the 7s in the 1/4 mile now. And like mentioned above, a few grand in mods and you're nearly at 1000hp and running in the 9s on a stock engine. If you want SPEEEEED it's a solid option, cheaper than a GTR with a much better transmission and interior.

After test driving one I knew I couldn’t possibly drive it to even 2/3 of its capabilities on the street. The damn thing is unbelievable, but it’s not for me. I’m glad it exists.

Agreed. As I mentioned, its hard to argue it's ability in terms of speed.
