To Tune or Not to Tune?

My M3 has the BW street/track exhaust, stock airbox, and Megan headers.

I’ve already taken care of the necessary software modifications to prevent a CEL, either by manually editing the .bin file or using the ECUWorkz tool. Unlike my dad’s car with the full BW Race exhaust and a conforti, I haven’t noticed any major torque drop-offs or dead spots—my setup runs strong, has good drivability, and feels solid overall.

I’m considering a tune mainly because I know the stock tune isn’t fully optimized for my setup, but from what I understand, it should be safe. If I do move forward, I’d likely choose HTE, as they seem like the best current option. I originally looked at Epic, but the potential for the tune being locked and their extra charges for things like an EWS delete—even if I’ve already done it myself—turned me off. While I know Epic has a great track record for dedicated track car tunes, I don’t want to be nickel-and-dimed and potentially locked out.

Since this is a car I drive daily and take on long trips (like Houston to Road Atlanta), reliability is my priority over chasing the most aggressive tune for a dyno number. That said, I’d still like to take advantage of any safe power gains if they’re available, and I wouldn’t mind a slight improvement in highway fuel efficiency.

For those who have gone with HTE, have you noticed any downsides? Would this be a good route given my goals? I see most of his tunes are paired with the Carbon Airbox, and I know they yield great results. I assume the same applies to his MAF-based tunes as well?

I went HTE "canned" tune and being "safe" was one of my priorities; I was not out to chase max hp and I told Hassan that in addition to my mods/vehicle configuration (e.g., 6MT, cats, etc). After a brief remote-in session, car was done. No regrets at all, runs wonderfully. If I could have a remote dyno session, I would in a heartbeat.

Also with HTE and mentioned my list and goals and the car runs solid for years now

HTE is so affordable, and he listens, and he's not going for hero numbers, so I say go for it. You'd really get your money's worth if you can get on a dyno or, even cheaper, get a wideband sensor into your post cat bung and run the gauge into the cabin where Hassan can view AFRs over facetime/IG or if you can data log. Then you'll get a little more power and still be within a safe AFR range.

However, if you don't mind missing out on 15hp or whatever, the safest and cheapest thing to do is grab ECUwerx's tool and modify your bin yourself for things liks cold start/SAP/post cat o2s, etc with a $25 cable.

My race car has multiple EPIC tunes for various power levels/classes. Randy is very good at what he does but as you said, if power isn't the #1 priority there may be cheaper alternatives.

My street car has a paulclaude tune and it is very smooth and makes good power as well. It came with the tune so I don't know what he charges.

I ran on a similar setup for a little while and didn't have any issues. Probably fine for the street. Track...you're going to be running lean.

I have a canned paul claude tune, no issues. It was a big step up from an Evolve tune. About to go epic because I want power and a de-tune.

Did you EWS delete? I just did it using the ECUwork tool and modified the BIN file in hex edit. I didn't need a reflash.

If it is running lean then I will definitely get in contact with HTE. I’m sure the factory safetys are very good as-is but don’t want to be limit testing them to much when he can add some fuel.

Yeah I have already done all the modifications I need myself either with ECUWorkz when I had access with my friends software or manually editing my tune with a hex editor.

I used to tune my E28 like that so I prefer manual hex editing, however this DME is way to complicated for me to mess with myself for actual fueling/ign/vanos changes.

For Epic, When requesting for a tune from him I told him about the modifications and so to get a tune from him. He said I’d have to pay for EWS even if I did it myself. $300 to change a byte, that is already changed.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and from the other threads I have also read seems like he is good to deal with if any issues arrise as long as you reach out. He will also work with the customer for their needs Seems like a no brainer now.

can you elaborate on how it feels different post tune?

It just feels stronger and "smoother" throughout the power band; noticeably faster acceleration for sure. I don't have any dyno numbers to back it up, however. Hope that helps.

HTE deleted my EWS for free when I asked. 👍

I had a similar setup and went with a hte tune to make it more smooth
