I kind of understood the pricing bit to say that if you go full csl there is about another 1.5k to spend on top of the price of the box to actually be able to drive the thing. If that's the case does that not make this a cheaper option?

I don't think so, the TMS box had everything in it when it arrived, literally just popped it in with the hoses etc and then had Hassan do the dyno tune which was around $200ish at the time and i was good to go. The only value I see in this is for those that want to keep the MAF, and can't get over the mental hurdle of installing a MAP sensor.

Did you forget that emissions testing doesn't work with a CSL tune?
It's like 80-90% less hassle than a CSL airbox AND works with stock tune AND you don't have to hope you get the right tune or search for a good tune so it drives smoothly. He’s probably referring to that in CA it still will NOT pass Visual and thus fail Smog. So it would still be needed to be removed completely and replaced with stock. It's not hard to find a smog shop that only scans OBD2 and doesn't care about visual. It is actually very easy if you're cool about it.
How much torque is missing from a CSL/Alpha N+MAP tune with CSL airbox vs a MAF tune? As some of us know, the CSL airbox especially with cams can be hard to dial in the low end torque, drivability and overall smoothness. It's been discussed a few times on the forums so I won't rehash, but one of the few CSL airboxes I've driventhat felt as strong and torquey down as the MAF tunes js Bry5on 's car with CSL airbox and his tune, and that thing has torque going up a steep hill in 3rd gear at 1500 RPM.
The tedious and expensive method to figure this out would be to take a car, slap this thing on it, tune it and dyno it. Then slap the CSL airbox on and all the other bits, have the same tuner tune it and dyno it. Then we will have our answer on how these two setups differ.

Sure this is kinda the point I made about the mental hurdle/hassle of learning how to acquire the resources to do this.
With that said, I don't see how plugging a cord into the obd port and uploading a couple software files is 80-90% of the effort, but I get it for those who want a simple solution. I mean, fwiw stock isn't all that bad either...🔹 2001 M3 Laguna Seca Blue

I've seen hot smoggers, and legit smog shops, never in between. But I believe you, just not my experience.
Hopefully this turns out to be a better solution than the existing karb to eventuri setup.

The fines have gone up so much and they have undercover BAR agents checking up on shops frequently throughout the year. To pass an obvious aftermarket CF intake change is classified as test station Fraud. $5,000-$250,000 mandatory now. On Fraud violation shop almost always loses license & so does the tech. Since these smaller Test Stations are often owner operated that’s their livelihood gone and ended. They’re not risking this anymore for a $50 smog certificate. Fines just for trying to obtain a fraudulent smog certificate is now $150-$1000 to the consumer. My friend’s shop once had a customer of their’s say they got busted by the State Referee for trying to use a Dinan CARB Exempt sticker on an aftermarket intake.
