Aside from hearing the brake dragging noise, I think it rotates freely.

Yeah, I feel it by the shifter stick, feels like it doesn’t travel as far as when it’s in.

Do you think with more effort moving the stick the gears will mesh deeper and wont' pop out, or it is locked up and couldn't push in deeper?
I would replace the balls/pins in the odd holes at upper right rear of the box. They create detent on the R, 1/2, 3/4 internal shift rods (ball or pin pushed on the rod groove), but if they are in bad shape then the detent became lock, prevents the rod to move far enough for the fork to engage the gears (actually the dogteeth to slider gear).

When it feels like the stick is not in all the way, especially in reverse at a standstill, sometimes when I give it extra force it goes in. This doesn’t happen at all times even when giving it extra push, I have to do it multiple times until it catches. In 1/2/3 when this happens, at times it is in gear but feels like not all the way from the feel of the stick. I haven’t tried forcing it as it’s usually while moving, I end up going to neutral and then back in gear.

currently it seems to be slipping in smoothly over the last 2 days, with once or twice not going into 3rd fully. Hope this makes sense.

should get the rebuild kit this coming week

I would replace the parts in the odd number holes at top rear right, and the roller pin (under the cap for SMG, or the GPS sensor for 6mt). These are the two places that related to the issue.

It was mentioned to be cautious and not damage them when replacing the detent parts. The sleeves in my transmission appeared to be in functional shape, so I left them alone.

Kind of makes sense honestly, on the ZF I did wonder if that part was more trouble that it was worth. Ultimately wasn't so bad, just tedious. It's almost impossible to do without scratching the inner bore somewhat, but since you are putting in a new sleeve, as long as you file down any raised spots it works out ok.

I would think either way you def want to do this with the tranny off the car, personally.
