      Of course turning the cam 180* with the crank at TDC, regardless compression or exhaust stroke, will cause bent valves.
      My point is that if the cams already relatively in time with crank before, then adjusting the vanos timing or checking timing can be done with the crank turned to TDC compression or exhaust is ok.
