There must be a lot of play in the driveshafts..
The short shaft has much plays but the long shaft has almost none.
The plays is not the result of old worn clutches. It's set by the dimension of the splined shaft (the core of the clutch pack) sandwiched between the side-gear and the viscous pump.

Thanks, I am aware of the construction of the diff. My point is any diff that has done 176k miles without a rebuild, will need a complete overhaul.

The play on the stubby shaft is driven by spider gear lash. Longer does not have as is connected to the clutch stack which does not move as is held by the stack.

the splines have minor play, almost nothing

I rebuilt my lsd with racingdiffs clutches several years ago. My car makes a lot of torque and it still locks up. That said, you have to spin the wheels before the lsd activates so I recently pulled it back out and put a wavetrac in.
