Trackside Call for Help: LWS Steering Angle CAN codes?

At VIR today and all my lights lit up like a Christmas tree. Wondering if anyone can provide any ideas. I cleared all the codes but they came back. Neither my foxwell nor autel is able to adapt the steering angle sensor in the DME, the procedure is there but it errors out.

The SMG cog light, DSC light, and Brake light are all on.

Whats odd is that I can talk to the LWS just fine with the scan tool and the angle reads correct.

    Here are the codes present:

    SMG module

000099 - evaluation of transversal acceleration via CAN.

    DME module

000085 - Digital Motor Electronics (DME), CAN timeout, LWS (Steering Angle Sensor)

000044 - Digital Motor Electronics (DME), Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) safety concept

    DSC module

005E1E - ABS-DSC, LWS (Steering Angle Sensor) CAN

    Any ideas?

Hmmm, is odd its reading correct, but do your devices have the same options as the Schwaben? I know members have competed with the Schwaben, but I thought the Schwaben was essentially a rebranded Foxwell.

Do you have access to INPA or Tool32? Both have the ability as well.

This describes the steps needed to reset/calibrate the steering angle on the ASC or DSC module in your E46 using a program called Tool32. This may be needed in several different situations, but most commonly after repairing the front steering/suspension or replacing the DSC module. You must...

The one time I didnt bring my INPA cable…

I have the schwaben/foxwell scanner and a pro-level autel. Both yield the same error message.

its just weird that both the dsc complains about the CAN messages from the lws and get smg ecu complains about CAN messages from the accelerometer which I think is connected to the DSC

Maybe try unplugging the SZL? Also try unplugging the yaw sensor. I assume the SMG still shifts? I'm not as familiar with the SMG wiring but the ABS works without any connection to the rest of the car other than power and ground. I could see DSC causing an issue. ABS will work with the SZL and yaw sensor unplugged.

But if the SMG doesn't shift then disregard.

I just had a misfire at a track that is 5 hours away last month and of course...forgot the spare spark plugs.

Good ideas. Thanks. The SMG still seems to shift but its not as crisp as normal. I was most concerned with ABS. But I do like having traction control for the morning session. I wonder if anyone level of traction control still works without steering angle.

Funny that DSC isn't complaining about yaw sensor only SMG unit.

I disconnected the battery overnight hoping it just fixes itself šŸ˜‚.

I think you'll get ABS intervention but not DSC. Gotta be smooth on the throttle.

Two sessions later and the lights went back to normal and no more codes.

I'll have to look at the logs to see if maybe battery voltage dipped …

              /shrug

We're home and the car kept on turning laps! Love this car … sometimes

That's why I love the Solo DL. It is a great help in diagnosing issues. I go through all of the readings after a weekend to see how things are doing. It caught a voltage regulator going bad before it went completely kaput (a german technical term..lol).

I would at least buy a spare SZL and maybe replace. Not sure how much of a pain it is to do? You do need to be able to calibrate or least take a reading.

The codes point to bad CANbus communication. Did the coolant temp gauge needle jump to the red zone too? I think a glitch on the CAN bus 2-wire connection.

No, all the gauges were fine. I have a canbus logger and all the PIDs were still logging just fine. But there is also a private canbus I believe between the DSC and ECU?

The CAN bus connecting DME to these module: dash, SMG, Steering angle sensor, DSC/abs. All of them connected together and I don't think there is a private bus for the DSC.

Interesting. I'll need to dig into that some more. Is the MK60 lateral acceleration sensor under the driver seat also a CAN sensor like the Steering Angle? If so all signs might point to a wiring issue or fault in the DSC module.

I have had a numerous of amount of these codes and was struggling with CAN/DME timeouts. We couldn't figure out what the issue was and it ONLY happened on the track. It was so weird. I drove on the track without the SZL connected for some time. Not sure if it's coincidence but using the ODBlink MX+, I felt like I can guarantee I would get these codes -- I switch to the Kiwi 3 and it was "fine". Now I just connect my RaceCapture to CAN. I did these items that "seemed" to "fix" the issue:

                          1. Put in new SZL
                          2. Sent out MK60 for repair (modulemaster)

I forget if my shop also swapped out the yaw sensor but after all these, I haven't received any of these codes in some time *knock on wood*. Honestly, we are not sure why I kept getting these issues or what fixed it.

                            Thanks!

I also use racecapture. Don't use any OBD interface on track. Are you terminating CAN on the racecapture side? I am just tapping into CAN on the OBD connector side.

Did modulemaster find anything wrong with the unit to correct?

                            I've already replaced the accelerometer.

Yes, terminated CAN on the RaceCapture -- tapped into the wiring near the steering angle sensor. Modulemaster said they did some "cleaning" or "testing". Not sure if they really did anything besides me paying money for some service. :P
