Window Regulator Point of Failure

Hello Group - the OEM window regular has jumped from 550 to 700 on FCP euro. With no quality aftermarket alternatives, I came across sapote comments about the common point of failure in the regulators. The repair kit Sapote mentioned is NLA on ebay (seller does not plan to restock either).


I'm curious if any of the 3D printers or on the forums could help make the plastic piece (L) and possibly modify it mitigate the typical metallic crunch / ting sound that leads to most of us needing to replace the regulator.

The weakest link of these parts is the steel bead B cut through the plastic window lifter L in pic below. I improved it by drilling couple small holes on both side of the cable near the bead and will small steel wire to tie the bead down tight to the lifter to avoid the bead cut through. Once it cut through hell broke loose.

Good engineering should have made the bead interfaced directly to metal part, not plastic, and have the plastic inserts to ride on the regulator vertical metal rail for low noise and friction.

Pic is from ebay seller for the repair kit $9. I would buy the kid to repair the broken stock regulator.

FWIW: The thread you linked has posts about general hate for URO parts, which is generally warranted, but actually zero testimonials about URO window regulators failing at a faster rate than OEM? I can say that I've got two URO regulators in my car for the last 5 years, no issues. I don't think that it's clear that the URO part is actually terrible in this instance.

That said, of course it would be great to have repair kits available!

Thanks for the data point. I don’t think anyone vouched for the Uro kit (I believe that was OP’s desired outcome for that post)

I just put a cheap ($30?) regulator in my e90 from amazon. Fit was perfect, identical to original. I'll link it incase you can find an E46 coupe version.

I don't mind trying some of this cheap stuff because they're getting closer to 1:1 to genuine BMW (BMW has also fallen in quality). Plus, if something's off, return it! Easy.

Traditionally, I've always looked for regulators out of crashed cars. Never paid retail for genuine BMW on regulators/motors.

I replaced 3/4 regulators on my wagon with cheap Amazon units and they've been going strong for years. For me it's worth replacing these cheap units again vs buying an expensive genuine unit.

I think I am still rocking my original oem regulators... Do the cheap amazon ones work the same as oem?
