Exhaust realization

I’m sitting here embarrassing thinking as to why I wanted a loud s54, I have came to the realization that I need to keep my oem exhaust on or possibly get the scorpion or ac schnitzer, I have Megan racing headers and I did the dual oem section 1 resonators and top speed exhaust and it sounds a lot better but I just can’t stand the sound it’s too loud, I should have listened to you ogs to begin with, I’m getting some induction noise and the ac schnitzer exhaust and it should be smooth sailing from there

      Pretty much this.

OP: I have a friend removing his full SS race setup to go back to stock for similar reasons. You are not alone.

My setup is: CSL headers -> euro section 1 -> SS resonated section 2 -> OE muffler. Can’t hear it. Rasp goes away once Section 2 is warm. That is all.

LSB4Me Thanks for that info. I'm trying to go this route with my car actually. Having a great time souring Euro sections though 😅

bmwfnatic may be able to help, although it’s been a minute since I’ve seen him post about any on hand.

Euro headers > Sunbean catted sec 1 > SS Resonated sec 2 > SS Sport sec 3 = music to my hears. Took me 5 years to finally not HATE the sound of the S54. Unlike other, I hate the rasp. I can't disassociate the sound from a riced out-civic; I just can't.

Thei setup sounds so good "to me" that I got rid of the Karbonius airbox because I didn’t want competing sounds from the exhaust and airbox. Not to suggest the box was loud enough to complete, because it’s actually underwhelming, but nonetheless, it delivers a great sound on its own.

The addition of the Sunbeam brought the entire exhaust system to life.

It’s all subjective, but the one fact for me is that I finally love the sound of the car now.

Based on all of the M3's I've driven with various exhaust and intake combinations, my favorite setup is a 100% stock exhaust with a carbon airbox. The stock exhaust lets you hear just enough to be engaged, but it's not overwhelming or drawing unnecessary attention. The intake noise is really where the S54 shines.

I switched to euro headers and cats that helped a lot with the rasp. I’m looking to get a better sec 2 or do something custom. The Dixis I have isn’t really that loud, just at start up and calms after the car is warm.

We need a "new owners" section on the forum. I mean, these days the new guys have the same questions.

Thanks! Looks like bmwfnatic has a recent classifieds post, but I can’t reply or PM since I’m still a new member -_-

I had one cat again, was paid on Friday. They move quickly.

I would have sold the car if I couldn't figure out the sound. I have the CPI RTX, SS res single sect 2, and SS Sport. I think it sounds great. I've never heard an S54 that sounds bad swapped into another car, so it's 100% something with the stock configuration. I have a theory about letting the banks mix somewhere in the exhaust path based on the limited number of exhausts I've seen on swapped cars.

But in general, keep the cats, keep the resonators, and keep the muffler on this car and you'll end up at least not hating it.

I was there. Sunbeam cats are expensive for what they are, but I justified the cost by telling myself that if they didn’t improve the sound, I was done trying. The E46 is the most difficult M car to get the sound right on.

                              Sunbeam doesn't sell a catted section 1.
