Oil filter housing gasket and FCAB replacement

    Hi guys,

I need to replace the engine oil filter housing gasket and my front control arm bushings. I already have the parts. I contacted a shop and they are charging me about $530 labor for the gasket and $225 for the FCAB. Does this sound about right to you guys? I think it's kind of high but wanted to know what you guys think. They also suggested I replace the oil pressure switch since it's right there when they do the gasket job. Thoughts on this?

Never done the oil filter housing gasket, but FCABs are easy. Shouldn't take more than an hour of labor for those, I would try and get a second opinion. RRT Racing is the shop I use for stuff I can't, or don't want to DIY. If you are in Southern MD, might be worth reaching out to them.

      Agreed on FCABs.

Oil filter housing gasket is pretty simple too. Drain oil, remove fan and shroud, remove pulleys and tensioners that are in the way, remove alternator, remove oil filter housing, replace gasket, and put everything back together. Took me 2-3 hours to do. Not sure how that would translate to shop hours, but it won't hurt to get a second opinion.

Thanks man. I will ask RRT and a few other shops too. I'm in the Silver Spring area but don't mind going to the right shop if the quality of work and price is right.

2 hours for OFHG and 1 hour for FCABs seems right. That would be an atrociously high labor rate given the estimates you quoted. Both are pretty easy and well documented DIY jobs if you want to try to tackle it on your own and save some coin. I just did both this past month if you have any questions. Sounds like you are supplying parts, so either way make sure you snag four new bolts for the FCAB lollipop housings if you haven't already.

RRT is crazy expensive. Head on up to Mt Airy in Maryland and go to York Automotive. Should be able to bang that out no problem.

For what its worth though. About a year ago I thought my OFG was leaking but it actually wasn't. Not a common failure point on the S54. Extremely common on the M54.

Same. Turned out to be my front main seal.

Yup it was a nice surprise after replacing the whole cooling system only for it to have to come back off again. :banghead:

I do believe there is a Viton OFHG available, if so way better than OE.

Bav Auto used to make it. ECS Tuning bought them out. Looks like they are still selling it under the bavauto brand:

$32...Whoa!! I do believe these were approx $15-20 when Bavarian sold them.

+1 for York. They've done work for me as well. Nice people, quality work, and reasonable pricing.

Do you know the part number for the main seal? I think I might just order it and have it on hand if that is the source of the leak. Nvm - I got the part number 11142249532
