Well, I think the point of it is that it is supposed to be “under water” aka under the oil level, hence the dipstick tube is used for this on the M54. So that whatever is draining through it is not fighting against possible positive crankcase pressure.
Apologies. I was looking at the pic the wrong way. Is that the same short pipe in my photo below?
Is the 4 prong connector on the end a different type of NORMA connector?
That is the SMG version and won't work on the manual; however, if your car was converted to manual and the installer kept SMG version, then you will need the SMG version.
^^ Indeed. Sorry ac247, I don't know if you saw, but I edited my response on the last page a couple of minutes after posting it -- the one that was in the other picture (the longer one) was the manual one, and this is the SMG one.

SMG on the left, manual on the right, pictured how they are installed in the car, if the car has been converted you can definitely just install the manual piece and get rid of the SMG 3 part design.

True, but those SMG to manual owners will have to pay three times more to get the manual version over keeping the SMG version. That little check valve must not be cheap lol

On the other hand, the SMG part is ~$45 and the 6MT part is ~$150, so I'd stick with the SMG part unless I was being really picky about the conversion being "perfect"

No worries, It's all good information. I just happened to have a spare pipe and the engine bay photo on my phone. So i thought i would post them.
Did you check this on the new factory tube you just bought? I've asserted this for a while, but want someone else who has known-good OE hardware to confirm it since I made my own hose.
This is the Genuine BMW part I've bought. It has a check valve here to the oil pan.
And this part number is for my 2002 manual according to RealOEM

Are you selecting your car in RealOEM by using the last 7 digits of the VIN?
Is that part what is defintely on your car at the moment?
I don't think there is a check valve on my car. There is definitely not a valve in part 11 61 7 831 336 in post 71 but there looks like there is a valve in my engine bay pic, post 61.

Picky SMG convert here. Must get this part now. Dang it.
I'm not sure how RealOEM works out whether the car is manual or SMG. Obviously if you put the last 7 digits in then it can work it out but from just choosing the series, body type, model and whether it is LHD or RHD doesn't seem to cover it.
