FYI: Do you randomly get an AWEFUL squeak in the morning?

So I had an epiphany recently about that horrid squeak that rarely happens on start up. People have been curious about it.

It's the throw out bearing. It only does it for a few seconds and doesn't do it often enough to really heat up and start shredding. I'm not sure why this happens on our cars but I've read quite a few posts asking about it.

I recently dropped a transmission to do a clutch that was making the same exact sound. The trust bearing had grinded itself apart. It was the only failed component.

It happens rarely. I've had it happen to me three times total on two cars. Freaked me out and I went on a research rampage a while back. I doubt it happens to most people.

What's the part number to the thrust bearing? What kind of mileage are you seeing with the cars that's squeaking?

Sooooo, this has happened 3 times on 2 cars and you don’t see ANY correlation?

          Really?

What thrust bearing? M3 don't have thrust movement to require a bearing; only male animals have them.

Do you meant the Fwhelel pilot bearing - which is not to handle thrust?

Just engage warp drive, that should solve the thrust bearing issue.

Wow I'm dumb. I meant throw out bearing

                    OK, TOB in this case.
Time to replace it or you will need to learn shifting w/o clutch very soon. Grease had dried up and it usually scream when clutching in cold morning and the noise seems to disappear after driving. Don't let this fool you bc it will seize up and cut into the PP fingers and destroy it. It happened to me once a long time ago. I was delaying the repair and one morning after driving about 3 miles from home the TOB completely seized up and screaming high pitch every time I stepped on the clutch. I made a U turn and pulled over to do a quick assetment, confirmed it's the TOB. It screaming so bad that I was afraid to touch the pedal; ended up shifted into 1st with engine off, started in 1st and managed to time the signal lights good enough to get through 4 signaled intersections to home. I saved the PP fingers just in time. So be warned.

My throw out bearing was fine when I pulled it out but normally, this does indicate it's failing. I've just heard this on two M3s and no one knew what it was because it went away. It's just strange to me the this happens even if it's super rare. I still replaced it because the trans was out but it still did it once on a cold morning afterwards. Yes, it's installed properly and no it's not a cheap aftermarket one. Pilot bearing was replaced as well.

Ok, if you have new TOB recently, then the noise could be from the PP special 3-finger things (the ones that surrounding the TOB fingers) that touched the TOB fork. This could due to PP was not adjusted properly when installed.

That's a possibility but from the factory also? I'd love to figure out why but the only consistent conditions are the cold and a cold start up. Other than that, it a phenomenon at this point.

Stock pp is self adjusting so there is slight deflection in the teeth.

The main bearing on cylinder 5 is a thrust bearing, but I guess that's not what OP meant.

Don't know what OP's squeal sounded like, but this is what mine was like when the TOB failed
