I am coming up on my 5k mile oil change. Last time I changed the oil, I used Motul 10w-60 because it was readily available at the time. I usually use Liqui Moly or Shell (BMW). One thing that became very apparent to me while having Motul in the motor is that I never had to top off the oil. I don't track my car, but I do enjoy spirited driving. With Liqui Moly or Shell, I have to top off the oil between changes. I am not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing, but I may just use Motul from now on.

It was my first time using Motul ever. I think I like it. I've always considered their products more "track" type stuff, so maybe that's why I've always stayed away from their oil. Being that I don't track my car.Originally posted by simon_c View PostI'm a big motul fan. Motul is top tier stuff imo. Never considered using it on my E46M though so may have to consider it.
I am not a fan of Liqui Moly, but I will use it if I can't get Shell.

When I had my STI, Motul was all I used.
When I got my M3, I used Castrol for a few years but switched over to Motul. I noticed it recently became a bit harder to find (or much more expensive). My go-to was Amazon but even FCP Euro says they're out of stock.Last edited by zzyzx85; 10-12-2026, 08:03 PM."your BMW has how many miles!?"

I've run the Motul 10-60 xpower in my car for the last couple of years, very pleased.

I get Motul from Summit Racing. Usually reasonably priced and good on inventory. They have 10w60 in both X-power and 300V.Originally posted by zzyzx85 View PostWhen I got my M3, I used Castrol for a few years but switched over to Motul. Im not going "back" to castrol, i just buy whichever oil has a good price and till now its just been castrol. Since BMW moved back to them i got a BMW Castrol oil change kit as it was cheap from FCP.Originally posted by BCEXP View Post
Why are you going back to Castrol? Availability?
Now since we have Motul locally and i already purchased from them it might become the norm to use Motul.
As long as im not running SHITTYMoly it's all good LOL

Motul is fine, though lack of moly additives is a concern over LM, especially on older bearings. Motul is very low in volatility/evaporation loss compared to LM, which results in less consumption, but LM's low temp flow would always be something I prefer over not topping off my oil.BMW / E46M Interior & Trim Restoration.

We received an update dealers are returning to stock BMW Motor oils supplied by Shell in April 2026 after Shell renewed its partnership with BMW Group in 2025. Shell began replacing Castrol as our engine oil supplier on February 1, 2026.Shell is known for their inroads in the base components and technology used as the
Whether it is Castrol or Shell, it is still quality oil that meets the requirements for this application. Well worth it as long as FCP still stocks it.
