Let’s talk trickle chargers (winter storage)

Winter is coming and I would like to store my car on a trickle charger this winter. Can anyone recommend a good battery tender or trickle charger? Today is prime day so it could be a decent day for a pickup off of their site. Could always wait for Black Friday.

Battery tender junior is all you need. https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tende...dp/B000CITK8S/ Reliable, proper voltage, and only $25. Tried the Harbor Freight one and while it worked a couple times correctly, though perhaps a higher float voltage than preferred of around 13.5v, the next time I hooked it up it was holding the voltage upwards of 14.2-14.4v (battery cooking levels), whereas "perfect" voltage for storage/maintenance is low 13v (13.1-13.3 depending on what you read).

Just look on eBay for BMW advanced charging system. This is the trickle charger that plugs right into your lighter. I’ve used mine for 15 years and my battery hasn’t died once.

I've also had good luck with that brand, although I like this model better https://www.amazon.com/Deltran-Batte.../dp/B01L0HTX72 only because it's easier to plug into a wall socket because the power plug is on a cable and not on the back of the tender.

Have a couple of Ctek charger / conditioners. The motorcycle ( high compression Ltwinn engine) has had one for last 6 years and I’ve only done 300 odd miles in that time. Last battery has lasted 4 years and whilst I don’t ride much but the bike is started every month without issue. It’s a1 amp model.

For the m3 I’m running an AGM battery and have a roughly a kilowatt RMS sound system. In the winter months I still daily my m3 but it can get caught in slow traffic running at low rpm. So draw on battery is often beyond alternator output. The 5amp ctek is great as I’ll plug it over the weekend. It has an agm battery charging option which the unit remembers and optimise charging. Battery is now 8 years old.

pior to the ctek a ran a different brand which didn’t last a year when I was posted overseas a left the motorcycle on one for a year. Ctek seems to be a quality brand with my ownership of a couple of them.
