Help needed with purple tag rack

so i have a 2005 m3 and now need to replace my steering rack, ive heard about the purple tag rack being an upgrade and direct swap but i am having trouble sourcing them out at a few of my parts suppliers. many of the fleabay ones are listed as RHD and are going for around 450. what year and model did they come? would i be able to just get one rebuilt like "maval" or "cardone"? the ones that i searched rebuilt dont have a purple tag can anyone point me in the right direction please

I’ve got a rack from Rack Doctor and I’ve heard of a lot of other people who have as well. Though they usually charge a core for the less common/more desirable racks. You might have to eat that if you’re upgrading unless you can pull a junkyard rack or something.

I would not waste my time going with the "purple tag .678" rack. Unless you're looking for an ultra cheap alternative along with a more boosted feel. Just get the "yellow tag .712". They're fairly common and internal valving is not as over-boosted along with the better gear cut. They're both on USA 325/330 starting in 2001. You find more .712s on the 330s.
*Also they may be a direct fit, but the ratio is not the same as non-ZCP/CSLs. So you'll want to reprogram your DSC for this or it'll trigger earlier in quick turns.

                712 is 330 only.

The yellow "712" rack has the same ratio as the ZCP rack. For further information: https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/m...rmation-thread

In other words, swapping a steering rack from a 330 with a BMW published steering ratio of 13.7:1 into a E46 M3 will not necessarily result in quicker steering than using a steering rack from an E46 M3 ZCP with a BMW published 14.5:1 ratio. In fact, both the 330 and ZCP racks will result in a 14.5:1 steering ratio when installed on an E46 M3, M3 ZCP, or M3 CSL. This is because both the 330 and ZCP steering racks have the same rate. More details on this later.

Yep (I already know that). Without the tie rods the rack "units" have the same travel.

Nah, you can find them on other models. Even 318/320's. Have confirmed two personally on stock 325Ci's. Had 7 other BMW owners confirm with me back some 10-12 years ago when gathering data. After that I stopped checking. I was unsure if they were replacements since the real bmw ETK disc has odd info at times(RealOEM is not as reliable a source). BMW part dealerships even list them 325/330. I'm not sure if BMW-AG factories had low stock and pulled these off shelf and installed these at times but they're out there. But as I posted believe they were mainly 330.
Think it's goes like, P/N 32.13.6.757.650 when installed at factory. "Listed" as 32.13.6.757.651 when remanufactured and sold by ZF/BMW. Although I always confirmed by visual tag numbers and date stamp.
*Some independant rack rebuild shops like to only list them as 330/ZHP specific so they can mark them up. Which causes confusion.
You can spend hours researching using different model VINs and when you think you got it narrowed down something else comes up to ruin it lol. 😩

thanks everyone! im not sure which direction to go now, i need a new rack because of the one in the vehicle is clearly worn, and was planning on going with the purple tag but once i found out that i have to code the DSC it made me hesitant. Now im finding out the purple tag is not worth all the hype as the yellow tag is clearly the better upgrade but still requires the coding. the dead spot on the stock rack is possibly the only incentive for me to move forward with either purple or yellow tags, however, the coding is something that is swaying me to stick to the original. not sure but will end up thinking a bit more on this any of y our opinions would help as well thanks

Coding is probably the simplest part of the swap. Takes no more than 5 min. You just need to go into the DSC module and change a parameter to the value of the ZCP/CSL rack (set LENKWINKELKENNLINIE_2 to wert_04).

I just did this upgrade on my 2004 e46 m3 to the purple tag rack. I definitely noticed a huge difference and the dead spot in the middle is now gone.

initial impressions are that it’s a little more twitchy at highway speeds but other than that, it’s very confidence inspiring in the corners and twisties!

As for the DSC, I did NOT code it and it is functioning fine for me, even with very aggressive turn-ins!

hope this helps you with your decision! Good luck!
