Anyone done this e-brake lever swap?

    Hello,

I don't know what i was thinking but sometime back i thought was good idea to get following two parts,

    e-brake lever assembly
    e-brake handle trim piece (upper)

I recall back then during looking up this option for the handle piece was to get the whole lever assembly with the trim piece.

What i'm looking into is, to replace the e-brake lever assembly, can that swap be done without raising the car, going under the vehicle?

Or, probably require a lift and someone other than a n00b to do the swap, and also requires some after-swap calibration?

    Thanks much.

It's literally held on with a zip tie.

M5's use that kind of e-brake handle.

That looks like the Z8 ebrake handle-- which happens to be what I have installed in my car.

Boot is, indeed, secured by zip tie.

        Thank you.

Yes, i believe the inspiration for this Z8 ebrake handle came from Obioban's past installation thread.

I believe i need to replace the "whole" e-brake lever assembly to get the handle and the matching trim that comes with this ebrake handle, correct?

If correct then my original question in OP was about replacing the stock ebrake with the Z8 ebrake lever assembly.

Does that require lifting the car, going underneath?

Or, could be done as a straightforward swap that do not require calibration/adjustments after the swap?

        Thanks again.

Yes. You just have to (obviously) remove the centre console.

(You don’t need to use the special tool - 1/4 drive deep sockets work fine)

You can just swap the e brake handle. No need to swap the entire assembly etc. This is a 10 minute job homie.

Thank you for that. DOH, i didn't check the TIS first. I see the steps there,

Also found this good DIY video about disconnecting the lines with 10mm socket.

I'm thinking that once disconnected these lines will not just drop down to the bottom of the car...

I thought so too, but the handle on this Z8 ebrake will just not come out.

As i said above, i'm kind of stuck with this now.

Nope. They're held in with a couple clips underneath. I think the ends are also held in with friction against the tubes that guide them to the handle (or maybe that's just in the subframe?). Regardless, they won't drop down when you remove the nuts.

In addition to the above, when you are re-installing the nuts make sure to tighten them correctly such that the handbrake is adjusted properly. I think the BMW spec was 1 click/free wheel, 2 clicks/resistance at wheel, 3 clicks/locked wheel (when on jack stands). The proper-proper way would be to adjust the shoe-pivot point first, but IMO not completely necessary if you don't want to as there should be enough threads at the ends of the cable to compensate if that adjustment is a bit off.

It would suck to run the nuts down too much such that you were unknowingly dragging the shoes on the rotor, or wrap everything up to find out that your handbrake no longer holds the car.

Yeah— it’s been 15 years, but IIRC that’s how I did it.

Took a while to get the whole lever replaced. I gave up on just swapping the handle.

                        Don't look too bad...

Used pair of floor jacks to get both rear ends lifted (LSD... ) while adjusting the nuts. The nuts after tightening seem to hold the car, but i got tad bit loose for the 3 clicks. I would rather not have the shoes dragging on the rotor at 0 click. Will get this looked at when the car is at local shop for March dyno day.

Just FYI you could've just used one floor jack under the rear subframe
