    Solid Steering Coupler

Just saw this on FB (believe it or not) and thought I’d share. I know there was a discussion on the old M3F about it...and if IIRC, there wasn’t a product available at that time? Well, this looks like it may be promising for those still looking for something like this...

This looks very promising. Do you have to drop into the column to insert the set screw?

Ehhh, I don’t know, but I may get this just to compare vs stock coupler.

Hmmm, found another one on Fleabay that looks very similar.

I think CMP was working on a solid coupler at some point.

All jobs done as diy - clutch, rod bearings, rear subframe rebush, vanos, headers, cooling, suspension, etc.

PM for help in NorCal. Have a lot of specialty tools - vanos, pilot bearing puller, bushing press kit, valve adjustment, fcab, wheel bearing, engine support bar, etc.

They currently sell one but it's RHD only. I have a feeling it's specified as working only with RHD cars because the RHD steering coupler has a universal joint at the end of it (steering rack side) whereas the LHD coupler does not.

Assuming the LHD coupler deals with both rotational and axial loads (probably slight but I can't imagine there being absolutely zero axial load), a solid connection would be an inadequate substitution for the rubber bushing since it won't deal with the axial loads. I mean, it'll work fine, but that load will inevitably be transferred and cause accelerated wear elsewhere.

Stash1, if the RHD coupler fits on LHD cars (i.e. clocks the steering wheel correctly, since the connections on either end of it look identical to the LHD part), then maybe you could get one of those and swap the rubber bushing out for a solid one (CMP or something).

I think this would substantially improve feedback but I'm in the boat with Heinz. What is going to break first because of it?

I came across this completely by accident and remembered about the thread. Is this the type you are looking at!

I have an aluminum version in place of the rubber one, it makes the steering much more responsive. And also sensitive so if your wheel balance is off, you will definitely feel it.

I put the CMP solid coupler in recently - a subtle but noticeable improvement to steering response and feel. Recommended for street or track.

replaces the rubber 'guibo' (which is not a uni joint!). I can't imagine this part would differ between LHD and RHD models

Cool, thanx, yeah...this wasn't so much I'm gonna do it thread, as it was simply meant to be an info gathering/sharing type deal. Although, I am tempted to get one just to try it out.

Yeah, I'd heard about this one as well, and it looks similar to what I posted...but I don't know anything else about it.

Thanx for posting, good to know! What's the cost of the CMP one?

                        Here’s the CMP one:

edit: I’d get the AKG one and call it a day:

Our BMW E36 E46 RHD aluminum steering shaft coupling eliminates the factory flex shaft coupling for precise steering feedback. Made in USA.

If you're outside Australia the postage will probably cost more than the part :-) - so not much - really nicely made. I would prefer it to a uni joint as it is a SOLID connector - but you must drill out the rivets on the Guibo to reuse the 2 mounting plates

Bought this one from Condor in November and installed it in conjunction with a yellow tag ZHP rack.

Unfortunately only had two days to enjoy it before winter hibernation. Despite the limited seat time I can say the two mods together are a welcome improvement in both responsiveness and quickness (as one would expect). Definitely a heightened anticipation to get the car back on the road this year. So much so that I sourced a couple mint condition original sales brochures to tide me over:
