SMG Lightweight Flywheel Options?

I recently had the SMG to 6-speed swap on my M3 and to be honest, I wanted to upgrade as well since the tech was already inside there. After hours of research, I went OEM for the clutch and the flywheel.
My car is built for the street with spirited driving around Northern California. I don't think there was a positive review for any flywheel at the time, they're all super chatty when idling and I wasn't willing to deviate from an OEM+ build. I figure the BMW tech's chose a dual mass flywheel for a reason.

My JB Lightweight flywheel barely chatters. It doesn't chatter at idle at all. The SMG doesn't like it very much and I've had to relearn driving it. The weight does affect the software but it's not end all be all. The experience just isn't always pleasant. Sometimes I'll turn my car on and it'll slam the clutch instead of easing it and I have to pull the key out the N disappears. Downshifts above 4500 rpm are wonky. It searches and has a hard time finding the right spot. The automatic downshifting is twice as bad as it already was so anytime it drop to around 1400 rpm, I just pop it in neutral so my clutch isn't sporadically engaging and disengaging for a second.
All the SMG needs is a retune but no one actually does it. It's annoying because the CSL software is awesome. With a lightweight flywheel, it could be even faster. The market to pay for R&D just isn't there. You also have to tune the DME along with it to avoid misfires. This is my Unbuild Journal and why we need an oil thread

Someone allegedly tuned the SMG so it should be possible to improve it.Originally posted by stash1 View Post

I have a private msg for you.Originally posted by Triqzy View PostClutch is giving out and considering the possibility of a lightweight flywheel. This product seemed the most promising, anyone use it before?
Lightweight Stage 2 Plus Flywheel and Clutch package for E46 M3 6-speed and SMG - 8.5 lbs. Which transmission do you have?: standard 6-speed manual. clutch type: Performance Organic disk (street/track); UltraSmooth cerametallic (street/drag racing/FI); multi-puck ceramic (street / drag racing / FI); Segmented Kevlar (street/track/high-power).
In general are there any recommendations/pros/cons for a lightweight flywheel on an SMG car?

I don't remember, if you do some digging you'll find them. I'm not mad I added a lightweight flywheel but the shift speeds have gone down. I'm just going to switch to a solid steel flywheel around stock weight. I've driven mine for 6k miles now and I'm ready for the SMG I used to love or a manual swap.Originally posted by stash1 View Post

Inline engines have alot of torsional vibrations and the flywheel is a main dampener in those forces. Since I'm going to really beat on my car, I'd rather kill some of those frequencies. I do have most of the parts for the swap. I basically need a bell housing and a gear position sensor. It's just finding the time. There's ALOT my car is about to undergo so I need to manage my mods wisely like a diff rebuild. That one is not by choice but ole' Liquimoly chose for me.Originally posted by benzthis View Postmanual swap and you can keep your lightweight flywheelThis is my Unbuild Journal and why we need an oil thread

If you really want a fast-shifting "auto" trans you should look into a DCT swap. Otherwise, CSL software and the stock flywheel is your best bet.Originally posted by stash1 View Post

I'd give "blue flywheel of death" a quick google before purchasing that.Originally posted by Triqzy View PostClutch is giving out and considering the possibility of a lightweight flywheel. This product seemed the most promising, anyone use it before?

I had to stop before I went down a rabit hole. A very interesting find. You can get a UUC clutch kit 20% off though 🙃Originally posted by S14 View Post

Welp a quick google search found enough for me, so scratch that. I'll be going with an OEM replacement. Reviews on lightweight flywheels and SMG cars seem to be hit or miss, and for the labor I'm paying I can't afford the chance of a miss. As a side note, during a clutch replacement are there any other things I should consider doing "while I'm in there"?Originally posted by S14 View Post
