Tire options that aren't PS4S

I've spent the last two months with Continential ExtremeContactSports and have been really impressed with them. The ride/road noise is easily as good as the PS4S and the grip is also excellent. Can't comment much on wear yet but I did drive 2200 miles to San Diego and back and they showed basically no wear. I also drove through torrential rains which it handled really well. However, the snowstorm I hit coming back home from San Diego was a bit sketchy AF...don't recommend that tire in the snow.

Hard to judge since it was oem suspension and not back to back but I was glad they were gone. The ps4s, cant wait to get another set. Plus you cant make the ps4s come loose on the street and exceptionally predictable.

I've had a few sets of Conti's before and never really liked any of them - DWS, DW etc - but the ECS are a pretty good tire. I still think the MP4S is a better tire, but for the money ($250 cheaper) the ECS is a good buy IMHO. We'll see what the tires look like after 10k miles.

I have the stock conti ecs tires on my f80 and they’ve been surprisingly great even for the few times that I bring the car to the track.

Well I’m an instructor with nasa tx and compete in TT in my e46 m3. So I know how to push tires well enough.

They’re good tires for what you’re buying.

Conti just announced a new 200 tw tire that should be supposedly is long lasting like rs4 and have better grip. Might wanna give those a look.

The F80 is not a great comparison as the geometry is different. The only car I would compare to is another E46 M3 with similar suspension and weight. That being said, my Continental DWS06s were super comfortable but started loosing alot of grip woth over 75% life. The tread wear was actually pretty phenomenal which is probably why the traction sucked. It was a really quiet tire and extremely comfortable. It was night and day when I put on my PS4S. I could hear them, the road was harsher, but I had grip.

I've had three sets of the DWS06s on our X5, the only things I liked about them were they were half the price of the OEM tires and they lasted 40k miles. They're not a very memorable tire otherwise, the sidewall is so soft it makes turn-in feel slow and imprecise. Michelin finally came out with the AS3+ and now the new AS4 in the X5s 315/35R20s rear tires a few years ago and I'll never go back. I got a set of AS3+'s a few years ago and they're night and day difference in every way. We have about 30k miles on them now and the rears will need to be replaced before the rains come this fall but I think I'll get 35k on them before then. Even with the slightly worse tire life, they're well worth that trade-off, especially since they're almost the same cost. They're fantastic in the wet and dry traction is top-notch for an all-season tire.

A few years ago at Big Willow raceway, I had a bit of time left at the end of the day since my race car had melted its brakes and tires so I unhitched my race car trailer and took the X5 out for a few laps. In 2 laps the DWS06s got greasy and the car started to feel really loose. Came in and the tires had already started to gum and melt. I wasn't driving THAT fast and our X5 is a diesel...still did 125mph on the front straight though! Once the DWS06s get hot they just fall apart and melt, do not hold up to the track well at all.

Also its important to note that the improved treadwear on ps4s over extremecontact pretty much cancels out the price premium

Discount tire/Americas tire look like they have it.
Just want to shout out to the PS4s again, mine are toast in the rear and I can't believe how comfortable/quiet they still are and how long they lasted, pretty much a no brainer. Since the car is up for sale and I didn't feel like donating PS4s to the new owners, I replaced with a cheaper (but good looking) option this time, Advan Apex. Will report back if I get any serious time with them.

Thanks for the tip. Despite what the site says I've called several retail stores around the bay area in the past few days and they've all confirmed that ps4s are currently on backorder and are unable to provide an eta. Several store mgrs have been helpful and confirmed this by calling the reps for the distributors they work with.

While I'd prefer to give my business to one of my favorite local shops 5 Points tire, AT seems willing to guarantee a pair soon as the first inventory begins to arrive if I'm willing to come in the store and place an order.

Not interested in going with something else either since I replaced the fronts about a year ago and have hardly driven much since. For the time being, I'm not in a rush so I'm going to continue to call around periodically.
