    M3mann’s 2005 Silver Grey M3 Build Thread

After years of being on hiatus, finally pulled the trigger on a 2005 E46 M3 in my favorite Silver Grey on Black combo.

Ive briefly owned a 03.5 silver grey about 5 years ago but quickly sold due to relocation. Now I’m back in a E46 M3 in my favorite color and in original 6mt.

    Work done by previous owner:

19” BBS CH in hyper silver
    Karbonious CSL Airbox
Short center console with armrest delete
Roof and pillars wrapped in Alcantara
    Besian VANOS kit installed
    Rod bearings replaced

As far as I can tell, everything else is stock

    Day 1

Weather was good so I drove it to work

The karbonious kit installed by PO didn’t have the snorkel piece. I purchased the snrokel from Haimus shop located in Bulgaria. Came in about 2-3 weeks.

    Before (POs listing photo)

    Snorkel installed

Original rectangle rear view mirror was shot so it was replaced with a e9x piece with compass and homelink. Auto dimmer works and everything is plug and play. I remember a lot of people struggling with leaky fluids and getting it modified to have the liquid drained. This is a easy fix for the faulty piece with way less hassle.

Same day as the rear view mirror, had the dark grey Alcantara shifter and e-brake boot installed. I was going for the ZCP wheel Alcántara shade and it was a pretty close match. Also removed the worn out knob and replaced with zhp knob. Looks very oem+ and one of my favorite interior mods for the e46m.

Next up in modifications is the 16:9 android head unit to replace the stock business radio. I’ve decided to go with the Avin Avant 4 to maintain the stock esthetics.

I decided to purchase the oe factory relocation bracket instead of the Dynavin bracket as this looks less plastic and maintains the oem look. Only modification is the USB 2.0 adapter/extension cable. It was fitted inside the cigarette jack and epoxied with the male output connecting to the CarPlay module on Avant head unit. The hollowed out cigarette jack snaps right into the bracket. I’m really liking the clean look.

It’s like 100 degrees in Texas so all of non-electrical work is done with the a/c blasting!

To wrap up this introductory post, I’m working on the Avin Avant 4 install. This was purchased second hand as msrp is around $850!
Currently trying to figure out how to get CarPlay to work on the android. If anyone know which app I need to download, please let me know!

Cant get it to fully work yet. First thing I did was download the original navigation screen start up display. (Courtesy of nam3forum member karter16!) tried to match the color as close to the stock amber.

    More updates to come!

Very nice! look forward to the next update! If it's not too much trouble at some point (not at all urgent) would you mind grabbing a few up close photos of the Haimus snorkel? I'm keen to see some detailed photos to see the quality. I'm planning my CSL intake build at the moment and I don't think I'll go the OE snorkel with flap route as it's a lot of added complexity and cost without any discernible benefit (plus I don't want to have to modify my DME to support the flap). I'm not a fan of Karbonius's Carbon Fibre snorkel (I don't like too much CF) and the Haimus snorkel looks like a great option as it replicates the black ABS plastic look of the original BMW item. I really like how it looks in your engine bay.

Thanks! For sure man. I didn't want to go through all the work with the OE csl part either. Not to mention the price. It appears to be 3D printed using resin. You can see very faint 3D print streaks. It's more visible inside but they tried to remove it as much on exterior. It's been sprayed with matte black paint so it looks very OE.

It is a nice alternative for those not running the flap; however, it does need a small mod. The partition inside the hole that divides the top air feed from the lower air feed reduces the sound volume. There is a 3D printed line where it can be cleanly cut and removed. Removing the partition inside the hole is kinda tricky. Once removed, it gets the full CSL volume.

That's great information thank you! I hadn't come across that so excellent to be aware of!

Car is coming along great. I have some questions for you regarding your rear view mirror swap.

Was your original mirror the SOS one with the little flap? If so, would you happen to know/share the part number for the E9x mirror you used with the dimming feature? Would you happen to know if any E9x mirror will work in terms of electrical connection? Also, would you still use the E46 baseplate covers, or the covers from E9x?

                        Sorry for the million questions!

You're always taking risk when buying an item second hand on the internet. The Avin Avant 4 headunit debacle has been giving me headache for the past few days, but I finally got everything to work.

First the USB cable with 6-pin attachment was the culprit. The stupid previous owner of the device fudged it with a very poor repair using aluminum foil. 🙄 Reached out to the seller and he tells me it's my problem and that it take effort to make second hand units work 😂 what a clown. (PM me if you need to know details to avoid dealing with this seller)

New 6-pin USB cable for android headunit was purchased on Amazon. Arrived in 2 days for $9 and works perfectly. Also came with a 4-pin cable. which is not used.

Next the CarPlay was not working even though the headunit came with a wireless CarPlay dongle. Numerous attempts to connect, factory resets and playing with settings all ended in a fail. I ordered a new CarPlay module from Avin and within minutes it booted right up. Google maps, Siri, Spotify.. all functioning as intended.

Taking into consideration of all the stress and annoyance of having to fix this “fully functioning” headunit, I should have bit the bullet and just purchased directly from Avin. Lesson learned I suppose.

CarPlay module USB is connected to the modified cigarette jack USB port in case I want to connect to CarPlay via wire or need to charge the phone. (Photo in 1st post) I have considered the wireless charge pad, but I frequently use the cup holders and don't want to part with it yet. Haha

Now fully functioning and ready to go!

Not pictured but I purchased a reverse camera. I wanted to have it hardwired to avoid static flickers or delayed responses possible with wireless modules. It's been wired up to the headunit and everything works so far! Turns on quickly when car is put on reverse. I purchased a 1080p resolution so let's see how it works especially at night. I'll post it when I get it installed and diy'ed onto the trunk handle.

Thanks man. The e46 did come with SOS mirror with the flap. I believe all E9x are compatible with E46 M3s. Here's the part # of the one I used. P/N: 51169192335. Mirror with compass and homelink.
It snaps right in and the original E46 M3 baseplate fits perfectly over it. Looks completely original IMO

The steering wheel finally arrived from Lithuania! Never knew the Baltics were known for reman bmw parts. 😂 It looks very well done. They claim it's wrapped in nappa leather. Let's see how it looks 6 months from now
