From what I understand, and correct me if i am wrong.
You can not flash (by OBD) the CSL software directly in a MSS54HP that doesn't have the CSL software (including bootloader program and data). The bootloader (say the first part of memory were the DME starts up in) is different between regular MSS54HP and a MSS54HP with CSL software. I suspect that once the bootloader is erased by OBD, the DME won't boot/start up correctly anymore making a bricked ECU. -> correct me if I am wrong here!
The patches make sure you can use the CSL software with a modified bootloader on an ECU that normally would not be flashable by OBD.
in short, the patch makes it possible to run CSL software in a MSS54HP ECU without the original CSL bootloader.
As far as I know, you can make a full CSL MSS54HP by loading the bootloader and other program and data by BDM. But this requires some soldering skills and BDM hardware to do so. As OBD writing is simple, it is the most favorable way of writing CSL software to a MSS54HP ECU without CSL bootloader.
In general an automotive ECU memory (ROM) consists of 3 regions. (1) Bootloader (start up), (2) Program (this piece of code runs the actual code) (3) the Data (the values and maps). It is possible that for instance a 2.5liter and 3.0 liter engine share the same bootloader and program but different data due to their different engine displacement.

Well that's part of what's offered, but also even for CSL bootloader individuals there are some bugs Karter identified and fixed, and also some extra features (i.e the alternator signal over CAN-bus)Originally posted by Tomba View PostFrom what I understand, and correct me if i am wrong.

I also suspect in the near-ish future it will be possible to update the bootloader over OBDII.
