I've had these tires for.....I don't know....a long time. Call it 5+ years. The car was on jack stands for about 18mos during a period, and didn't get driven much this season either waiting for rod bearings. I know they notoriously don't work well in the cold, but I was out putzing around yesterday and they were absolutely diabolical. Modest acceleration at modest rpm around a modest corner and the back was coming out on me. It was 55-60deg.
Ever since they sat idle during that long period they haven't been the same. Like they're just rock hard and slick as snot. First, sometimes with old race tires you can go pound on them for a session and they'll come back to life a bit. Anybody know if I should just go to a parking lot for a bit and do a bunch of donuts followed by some trips around a clover leaf or if they're just dead? Are the the PS4s as bad in the cold?
Also, perhaps some people aren't aware that the PS4 and PS4S are different tires. FWIW, the only sizes the PS4 is available in for the E46 M3 are the stock 19" sizes.2003 Imola Red M3 w/ SMG

I'll probably just get the P4S4, but since I haven't driven in the rain in years, I'd be open to a max performance dry tire....if the mileage (and time) lifespan is equivalent. Something like a Cup 2, but I don't think the Cup 2 lasts very long. I see the Direzza is priced the same, but I'd guess it's a 10k mile and 2yr tire?
I'm not planning on being a complete maniac on the street. More like finding a parking lot to do a couple donuts in. The fronts will be tougher to scrub safely, but I seem to have more issues with rear grip at the moment, even with staggered 275s.Last edited by tnord; 11-19-2021, 04:48 AM.

The top dog is obviously the Michelin PS4S, but it's also top price. I couldn't get the PS4S because they were back-ordered and ended up with Continental ExtremeContactSport and have been pretty happy with them. Grip is great, quiet, fantastic in the rain, and they're about 25% cheaper. They also have a killer warranty and roadside.

I'm running the extremecontactsport and would agree with everything you said as the positives. Now that it's cold in the mornings though, I feel like I'm driving on square tires! I've never experienced a tire "flat spot" so quickly. I drive the car nearly every day and even with 8-12 hours of rest the tires are quite thuddy for the first 10 miles or so.Last edited by S14; 11-19-2021, 08:20 AM.

Driving summer-only tires as we go into winter is a bad plan if temps drop below ~60 degrees.

I went through two sets on our old Mazda 3. they were incredibly loud for at least the last half of their life.
