Everybody is a broader brush than simply saying Michelins. He asked recommendations and I provided some further information to another poster that already said ps4 were more comfortable than ps4s which was what multiple people had already recommended. You or even the OP might not like the recommendation but thatโ€™s just bad luck as someone else might

I've had these tires for.....I don't know....a long time. Call it 5+ years. The car was on jack stands for about 18mos during a period, and didn't get driven much this season either waiting for rod bearings. I know they notoriously don't work well in the cold, but I was out putzing around yesterday and they were absolutely diabolical. Modest acceleration at modest rpm around a modest corner and the back was coming out on me. It was 55-60deg.

Ever since they sat idle during that long period they haven't been the same. Like they're just rock hard and slick as snot. First, sometimes with old race tires you can go pound on them for a session and they'll come back to life a bit. Anybody know if I should just go to a parking lot for a bit and do a bunch of donuts followed by some trips around a clover leaf or if they're just dead? Are the the PS4s as bad in the cold?
Tires are likely shot due to age, but no harm in trying to bring them back to life, as long as you don't crash.

Also, perhaps some people aren't aware that the PS4 and PS4S are different tires. FWIW, the only sizes the PS4 is available in for the E46 M3 are the stock 19" sizes.

I didn't know they were different, but I also haven't been paying attention for 5+ years. When I mention "PS4" above, I was generically referring to their best performing dry+wet street tire, which now sounds like the P4S4.

I'll probably just get the P4S4, but since I haven't driven in the rain in years, I'd be open to a max performance dry tire....if the mileage (and time) lifespan is equivalent. Something like a Cup 2, but I don't think the Cup 2 lasts very long. I see the Direzza is priced the same, but I'd guess it's a 10k mile and 2yr tire?

I'm not planning on being a complete maniac on the street. More like finding a parking lot to do a couple donuts in. The fronts will be tougher to scrub safely, but I seem to have more issues with rear grip at the moment, even with staggered 275s.

The top dog is obviously the Michelin PS4S, but it's also top price. I couldn't get the PS4S because they were back-ordered and ended up with Continental ExtremeContactSport and have been pretty happy with them. Grip is great, quiet, fantastic in the rain, and they're about 25% cheaper. They also have a killer warranty and roadside.

Edit: I'm running extremecontact DWS 06, sorry for the confusion!

I'm running the extremecontactsport and would agree with everything you said as the positives. Now that it's cold in the mornings though, I feel like I'm driving on square tires! I've never experienced a tire "flat spot" so quickly. I drive the car nearly every day and even with 8-12 hours of rest the tires are quite thuddy for the first 10 miles or so.

mine do the same thing. the first few times it happened I thought there was something wrong with the alignment, a bushing had failed, etc. nope. just flat spotted. They come back fine, but it surprises you at first.

Those are also Summer-only tires. Grip in low temperatures will be significantly reduced. The compound may be damaged driving them in the cold.

Driving summer-only tires as we go into winter is a bad plan if temps drop below ~60 degrees.

Sorry, I forgot the ECS has basically 8,000 variations of tire with the similar names, and I wrote that this morning before caffeine I have the ExtremeContact DWS 06.

Interesting, I've run V12's for 45K miles, and 7 track events, and they have yet to wreck my car. Are there better tires out there, yes, but these are fine for now. I tend to drive to the "ability" of my tires and brakes. IMHO, these are totally fine for a budget "driver" tire.

                        do not buy DWS.

I went through two sets on our old Mazda 3. they were incredibly loud for at least the last half of their life.

                          100% agreed.

"Wreck my car" was somewhat tounge-in-cheek. The sidewalls were like mush and the car wanted to push when pushed. Also that was many years ago so perhaps they're "better" now. That said, first impressions are lasting ones and I won't be going back for another try, especially when it comes to tires.

Bruh, every single time I drove my PSC2s on the skreetz, I could smell my burnt money when I got out of the car.

                                Hankook v12s are junk. Avoid.
