    Rear shock mount troubles

Hey y’all, I hit a nice pothole the other day and blew the rubber though the original driver side rear shock mount. No big deal, could have been worse. I replaced the shock mount with an identical Lemforder mount… and 10 miles later the rubber pops out of the mount again. At this point I have to ask, is something else causing this or are these OE units really that poorly designed and I’ve just had a very unlikely coincidence. Any similar experiences before tackling it again?

Is your shock seized up? That would be my first check. Tbh, I've never had an OE mount fail, but I do like how much more substantial the rogue engineering mounts are, that's always my choice for replacement.

I did order the RE replacements for this next go around. The shocks are one year old Bilstein B6, but possible siezed or warped from that pothole. Although it looked ok when I had it off for the first shock mount replacement

Try compressing it by hand, should be doable if everything's working correctly.

The first time was from an impact. That’s not uncommon to bust it.

The second was a premature failure. That is very often from not installing the bottom washer.

Other than that make sure you got the M3 RSM and not the weaker basic RSM.

Here’s the bottom concave washer orientation.

old///MFanatic thanks for the insight! I can’t remember now if I missed the bottom washer or not (entirely possible)- I replaced them with the Rogue mounts. All seems good now.

I’ve used the Rogue ones on my last 4 BMWs. Really like them.
Just so you know even with RE you need a bottom washer. But they supply it in their kit. Click image for larger version
