Yup, I feel you. My e36 front bumper is a little lighter than the rest of the car, fucking drives me nuts but not enough to repaint it and likely have it still not match.

+1 on the stock trunk. I don’t see the appeal of CSL

Installed mine today. Spent some time fine tuning the gaps, and got it to where my OCDs are fulfilled. Comparing the Vorsteiner to oem, the oem trunk def has a lot more imperfections in the mold than i expected. Edges are def not as smooth as the Vorsteiner but fits slightly better than Vorsteiner. Not by much though.

Had to dremel a bit of the license plate holes to fit the E9X lights & used clear silicone around the edge of the lights to prevent water from entering

Also had to trim a bit of the backside of the trunk behind the reverse lights...to fit the bulb holders in place (not sure if that was necessary, but couldn't get the holder to clip in all the way without trimming a bit)

I chose not to dremel the square for the tool trunk......and I'm ok with the stock carpet in place.

I've never installed a csl trunk but does it really require that much modification? Sounds like you prefer the chinese made vorsteiner, why didn't you just keep it?

Perhaps they're getting sloppy making these now I don't know.

Honestly if it weren’t for the carbon fiber/paint issues i was having w the Vorsteiner one, i would have been happier with that simply bc it’s so light and fits similar. I realize now how much a pain in the ass carbon fiber is to deal with when UV rays hit the thing (even when completely painted like mine)

Modification wise i only had to dremel out the hole slightly larger than what was there to put the e9x led license plate lights. If i stuck w OEM ones i think it would’ve snapped right in. As for the trunk taillight section i dremeled a little there too as i couldn’t get the bulb holder to snap in….but i come to realize i wasn’t clipping it in properly, so that part was user error i believe

i know a lot of guys will be getting the Karbonius one soon as they just released their new trunks, so for those that do i suggest bringing it to a paint shop that is proficient in painting carbon fiber. From the research I’ve done, priming it with epoxy primer is key before paint.

That stuff would expand and contract to the point where, overtime, the coating would texture (issue you were having), form spider cracks and turn cloudy/yellow. Painting a modern CF piece should be the similar to most other plastic parts.

thats good to hear! I'm all about CF products, but after seeing the issues with my trunk & reading about the issues with BMW CF roofs on the E92 M3 & F80....i've become weary on CF body panels. The Karbonius one looks so awesome though.....i'm sure its quality.

on stock cars and track prepped m3s with aero and a wing, i like the look of the stock trunk

CSL trunk looks better in every other scenario

bmw's evolution of policy on providing CSL parts to non-CSL owners is hillarious. from being adamantly against it, saying these were strictly for CSL owners only and requiring proof of ownership to purchase anything, to quietly selling as many as they can produce after realizing there are plenty of people willing pay $3k+ for a trunk made out of sheet molding compound

Great, thanks Matt! Hopefully there's the possibility of a material discount, maybe down to the price they had listed a few months back. (~$1,600).

Prices for the OEM bootlids have dropped across all sellers which I assume is the result overestimating demand and people's willingness to pay absurd money for a trunk.

I wonder how many OEM bootlids ECS/Turner have actually sold at these new inflated prices (with the exception of those who were able to purchase at ~$1,600 from Turner a few months back).

Please keep us posted - there's definitely demand for them at a reasonable price point.
