your test data just did not make sense to me, but 500psi is completely wrong. but how is it you have 1500 psi at crank up time? there is not enough engine RPM to do so. I have heard of a case where the issue was the valve body. the whole valve+solenoid assembly is 780. I just bought one to have a spare.

A normal engine setup might not have 1500 psi during cranking, because the pumped oil was used to fill up the ACC. OP had no ACC so the pumped oil had no where to go but shoot up the pressure.

Before shipping it out you could pull out the pistons and inspect the seals for damaged folded.

Just to clarify when it would shoot up to 1500psi during cranking, I already had the motor running prior. When I do a full cold start it doesn't shoot up. I did change the solenoid with a new valve body as well which changed nothing. But when the solenoid is unplugged the pressure is fine. So the only thing that makes sense to me is that it is leaking out somewhere after the solenoid is flowing oil.

I already sent the unit out but I did look through it. The larger ring on the oil piston looked like it got pinched a tiny bit. Normally I would think it was nothing to be concerned about, but at these pressures I would assume any blemish can be a problem.

Update: Dr Vanos went through the unit and said everything looked fine on it.

Does anyone know the wiring pin out for the vanos plug? I just want to check that there are no wiring issues.

Lol that’s my embarassing thread. Problem ended up being bad ground connector. In the e-box. Using scan tool I was able to actuate each solenoid and test voltage going to each pin of the connector. Tedious but effective. I would have never suspected bad ground without doing that test.

I had already replaced solenoid. So I kept it as a spare!

Thank you, just to clarify, pin's 2 & 5 go to separate grounds, not an ECU pin?

Great question. Im not sure. Don’t think it matters as long as they beep to a ground.

They both go to the same ground. The board itself inside the solenoids has those two pins electrically connected. They also meet up in a ground bundle inside that plastic conduit case thing (X6461). Then they go through a couple connectors in the DME area and end up at a chassis ground. I forget where that chassis ground is though. Maybe under the dash?

Anyway, no those grounds do not go to an ECU pin, they ground directly to the chassis.
