Acts as a muffler for the intake. There's a small opening in the bottom of the airbox that allows enough air to go into the engine with the flap closed at low rpm. The flap then opens to allow full airflow through the main opening (which makes more noise) at higher rpm.Originally posted by sdmcoupe View PostWhat exactly is the purpose of the flap?2002 Topasblau M3 - Coupe - 6MT - Karbonius CSL Airbox - MSS54HP Conversion - SSV1 - HJS - Mullet Tune - MK60 Swap - ZCP Rack - Nogaros - AutoSolutions - 996 Brembos - Slon - CMP - VinceBar - Koni - Eibach - BlueBus - Journal

I am interested as well as I have the flap, but it isn't wired yet. I noticed at idle there really isn't much of a difference at all. In fact I don't really even hear the CSL airbox until just under 4k with 4.10 gearing.2004 Silbergrau Metallic 6MT

That was me and I absolutely recommend buying the Section 1 directly from SS. I did not have labor cost in the equation, plus I chopped off the flanges and welded in v-bands, the point being I was already cutting things up. But generally speaking, its a no-brainer to buy straight from SS.Originally posted by sina View PostIf I recall correctly last time someone ran the math on (SSV1 catless section + cats of equal quality + labor) the conclusion was that the savings would be insignificant (ie. at beast a couple hundred dollars) compared to having the guaranteed fit and finish straight from SS?
Perhaps more importantly, and this is addressed with buying the SS section 1 catted (SS uses HJS cats), is you install good quality cats.
A company has a write-up on why use HJS cats. Its starts with an F and they make exhaust components for this vehicle....completely blanking on the name.'05 M3 Convertible 6MT, CB/Cinnamon, CSL Airbox&Flap, PCSTuning, Beisan, Schrick 288/280, SS V1's & 2.5" System, RE Stg 1&SMF, KW V2, CB PS, Apex EC-7R

First and foremost, its a throttle. The effort was not spent on simply noise control.Originally posted by heinzboehmer View Post

I don't have the flap and the volume depends greatly on throttle input.2002 Topasblau M3 - Coupe - 6MT - Karbonius CSL Airbox - MSS54HP Conversion - SSV1 - HJS - Mullet Tune - MK60 Swap - ZCP Rack - Nogaros - AutoSolutions - 996 Brembos - Slon - CMP - VinceBar - Koni - Eibach - BlueBus - Journal

Every dyno I’ve ever seen show it making less power with the flap closed than open— so, if it’s a throttle, I’m not sure what its function is.Originally posted by jbfrancis3 View Post

One minor downside to not running the "aux." (rear hole) hoses is that I am getting this weird kind of hissing noise at certain throttle input levels. It may be something else though, doesn't sound bad, just a different sound I am getting used to.
The flap may play a role in this sound but I'm pretty sure if I got any sort of tubing longer than 6" this noise would go away. Probably a venturi type effect.2004 Silbergrau Metallic 6MT

Yup can’t go wrong with Karb. I haven’t received my snorkel so I can’t comment on fitment issues.Originally posted by bjz! View Post

HAHA dude.. I feel this. I had to replace the intake cam position sensor not too long ago. So the IM has to come off, and those fucking clamps ruined my life for like... Way longer than I'd like to admit.Originally posted by COVID-19 View Post
Hardest thing is to remove the boot clamps. But if you get aftermarket ones it makes it easier.
What's the hot ticket for aftermarket replacements?
