    Motorsport Thermostat

    Stumbled across the OEM BMW Motorsport thermostat for the S54. Anyone running this thermostat for their street car?

    PN: 11531417215

    Did some research on the part and see that it’s technically not for street use cars… however, it’s not apparent to me why. I’m rounding up parts for a cooling system refresh and considering this as an OEM+ alternative to the standard thermostat.

    Does your car currently run hot? If not then this is not going to be beneficial. Cooler isn't automatically better. If your engine runs too cold (e.g. can't warm up and stay warm enough) you're going to increase engine wear.

      Never heard of anyone using it.

      Typically water temps are not an issue. Rather oil tends to be too hot on track, so people use an oil thermostat dummy, which always lets oil through the larger cooling loop. Drops oil temps by ~5°C.

        Stock thermostat is 80c IIRC, a 55c thermostat seems pretty excessive to me.

          55c is a performance mod but you need to modify the engine tune otherwise the engine will never know it’s “warmed up” so to speak so mixtures will not be correct

            A mod like this is for a track only car that gets trailered to the track. No need to OEM+ this part. Stock part just works.

                Even if it does run hot, this is not going to be beneficial.

                Thermostats help keep the coolant temperature above a certain temperature, not below.

                    The engine should run at the thermostat temp when moving at speed else there is a problem or insufficient cooling capacity if upgraded power mods. I’ve used colder thermostats on other cars and the engine will operate cooler except at slow speed in traffic it will likely creep up but come back down when moving again . Obviously it’s not there to fix cooling system or overheating issues
