Can you test the fuel pressure during both cases? If aftermarket fuel pump might not have a check valve and leaking down. OE one I would assume could fail in this way as well. So when it sits you're rebuilding 5 bar of fuel pressure.

I’m going to pressure test this weekend. After some new info from the PO, it seems like the fuel filter and the pressure regulator were replaced but not the actual pump/ sending unit itself. Turns out the issue started immediately after that…go figure.

Ordered a new Hella fuel pump either way. $700+ for the BMW one is absurd.

When it comes to replacing injector o-rings, is there a favored/more reliable brand?

Pulled some sort of bastardized Hella/??? fuel pump out. Put the new Hella one in, and it runs beautifully.
Idle is smoothed, fires up first try no issues.

Well just to provide some information Bosch and also ZF (Most known for Lemförder) have laid of significant workforce here in Germany and also in other places. In addition to that they have closed a lot of lines producing old parts. The S54 injectors for one but also the ride components. So 911 pre 2000 suspension parts are completely out of production and bmw e46 m3 suspension parts are going out to. The at least had a new run 2023 so parts places still have good stock. In general it’s recommendable to now do all your refreshes because I don’t expect most of these parts being produced again for the next 5-10 years and bmw increases the price of their stock tremendously as not to have nla shown in the parts Departement (something aloung the line of you could buy but… do you realllyyy need it)

For the lower ring I bought Elring 135.500. The specs are slightly different, so the fit is a bit tight, but they work.

I wonder how they deal with selling tools to make the parts.

For instance, on E28s they had a common upgrade to use E31 Lower Control Arms which were a factory spherical piece. These were availalbe from Lemforder for many years. Now any Lemforders left on the market will be used or is held by BMW. I'm, sure there is a set or two NOS floating around but nothing available from retailers.

Mevotech now supplies them and I can get them from Rockauto, I have seen good reviews from lemons teams, shops and other users with daily drivers now after a couple of years. But I just wonder if tooling, molds etc get sold to some of these other lower end companies we'd have avoided. Now even if they are using the same tooling, is the manufacturing process the same.... for heat treatment, material sourcing etc who knows.

I have found used parts are the best ways to stretch my dollar further with all these increasing problems. However it is scary that things like this will become a concern as modern tire grip increases. Spec3 has this stated in their build list for their cars due to on track failures.

E34 M5 Front rotors are a similar debacle.

This is about the worst news I've read on this forum. So many OE parts, made by Lemforder, that will just go away.

                    Also awful news for e39.

One of the reasons I choose not to daily an old BMW as much as I love them.

At least things like fuel injectors can usually be worked around by using a similar fuel injector and minor tune tweaks. Suspension pieces going NLA is a problem though.
