    New Tires

Currently, I have a slightly mis-matched pair on the car. I have the Continental Extreme Contact DSW06 on the rears (newer) and Continental Extreme Contact DSW (non-06 - older) on the front.

As you can see, I live in Casper, WY and currently commute to Douglas, WY. It's about a 100mi total commute every day on I-25. Speed limit is 80mph and I stick to it.

My concern is if I get another All-Season tire like that or if I go for a summer tire. Years ago, I had Michelin PSS on it I think? Honestly can't remember, it's been so long. I don't even remember what they felt like. I've also had Hankook Ventus on it at one time as well.

Naturally I'd like to go with a summer tire, but the interstate between Casper and Douglas gets downright dangerous in the winter. It's not uncommon for it to be closed due to snow/wind/ice.

I do have a Jeep Wrangler with BSG KO/2, so it's an admirable snow performer around town. I'd rather drive the M3 to work on those iffy days than the Jeep, but I usually grab the Jeep since the KO/2 are better in the snow. I also only drive the Jeep at 70 on the interstate because it just gulps gas at 80. lol

With as far as I commute, the M3 is preferred for gas mileage and comfort/speed.

Would you folks go with an All-Season or a Summer?

I personally think the performance benefit of a summer tire over an all season is negligible for street tires when going with Michelin. I’m in the camp for all seasons for general use. Also, it gives you more range to drive and give you confidence in not-so-good conditions.

I would get about 20k miles on Michelin summers, and 30k on all seasons. For the M3, I went with RE71RS because my tires will dry rot before I get mileage out of them so I went for max grip, low mileage tires.

Correct, I'm running Michelin all seasons. I'm thinking many don't drive their cars in freezing temps because summer tires are completely useless in those conditions. 100% useless, not debatable. I'm not going to the track so spirited driving is all my car sees. Plenty of grip for those parameters.

Agreed, 100% useless in those conditions...I think it's one of those things that you have to experience as well and just be like yep, they're little rocks now. 😂

I would get a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires if you plan on doing any snow driving. I'd rather not slam into a car/post/barrier than save the $1-2k.

Also,, just echoing what others have already said. Summer tires are completely useless below certain temps. Back when I lived in Colorado, I put on an old set of PS4Ss after a very light snowfall (1" or so) just as an experiment. Took like half a block to stop from 25 mph and had to leave the car on the street until the snow melted because it was impossible to get up my driveway.

Oh, I'm very aware of how useless summer tires are in the winter. I had the Michelins on the car and had the Continental DWS put on it. The shop had a sloped driveway and the car, in gear and with the handbrake on, slid down the driveway while off.

I'm just trying to figure out how much winter driving I want to do with the Jeep vs the M3.

Glad to see the All Season reasoning matching my own thoughts. Appreciate your inputs!

Yes on the snow tires. I group up in Hershey PA and during my early years of driving there was plenty of snow. Always had snow tires to swap over to in the winter. I've been out of PA for 37 years and haven't driven in any appreciable snow since. Any skills I had are long gone. I don't think I would trust myself to do anything but drive very conservatively in the snow lol.

Michelin AS are quite good if you actually want to drive in 4 seasons. As others have said, even in Houston the ps4s is useless and incredibly dangerous on the cold days

I'd say there are definite advantages to having summer tires when appropriate and winter tires where needed. You can certainly drive the car hard enough on the road to see the advantage of summers over all seasons; they just have better feel.

If you must drive below freezing and with snow on the ground, get a dedicated winter set. Summers are fine down to about 40. Totally useless on any snow, certainly.

All-seasons are not that great in the snow. I drove through plenty of Connecticut winters with my 540 on them, and it was always an experience through a couple inches or more. That said, the open differential was partially to blame.

You don't even need to drive the car hard to reap the benefits of a good, high grip summer tire. One emergency braking situation is enough. Few feet of decreased braking distance can make the difference between a damaged car and a non-damaged one.

Well said..and the steering feel is the big one I noticed every day.

My .02 is all seasons. All it took for me was having summer tires (Yokohama advan apex v601) in some light snow (a few inches) to realize I don’t need it. Got stuck on a bridge and proceeded to have a bad time. The DWS06 were great year round though! Haha

All seasons for sure. Both DWS06+ and PSAS4 are the top two you can get.

Think of it like this; all the money you save by not living someplace nice, can go towards a set of spare wheels with winter tires.

All jokes aside, respect for driving in the snow and not being afraid to use the car.
