    Intake suggestions

    Hello everybody,

I am about to install Schmiedmann headers and cat back 200 cells and trying to decide on an intake. I am currently looking at the Turner motorsport but no decision is made yet.

The CSL option is obviously another option but is it worth the money?

on this forum you're probably going to have most people recommend some variation of the CSL intake. The Turner one falls under the CSL rep category but has the trumpeted end. Karbonius and Haimus have the design where you can attach a snorkel or flap.

otherwise, I don't think many people will advise against the stock intake manifold unless maybe the Eventuri, although I don't have any experience with it

edit: just realized you were talking about the top one in the pic below...i think most people will just tell you to leave it stock

Yeah, that's Turner's version of the CSL intake...seems like the people who have it like it although I recall a member on here saying the trumpeted end was rubbing on his car. Pretty good deal though for a carbon intake all things considered.

Basically you have 3 choices. You can get something like AFE/K&N which will make a pretty good noise compared to stock, but not much else power wise (source: I have one)

Or, you can get the Eventuri which will make an even better noise, and a little bit of extra power with a stock tune (maybe)

OR, you have to go all in with a CSL style air box. If you’re doing headers and cats, I would just go for it and do a custom tune since you probably don’t have emissions to worry about. There are off the shelf tunes but I don’t think any of them are worth it, especially when you can have Hassan tune the car remotely.

There are a handful of air boxes to pick from, Turner is probably the cheapest but least good. I think most people go for Karbonius or Haimus

I looked at all of the ones you mentioned except the Haimus, I guess you get what you pay for.

            Thanks for your input.

If going the CSL route my vote is Karbonius. Eventuri is a nice option if you want something that is easy to take on and off.

I didn't realize Turner got into the game of making these now too. Sexy. Might have to make a move on one...
I'm as confused as you are.

Dumb question but who is Hassan and where can I read about his tune? Sorry, I've been away from the forum for a while and haven't kept up as closely. "back in my day" TTFS was THE tune to go with if you were thinking of going CSL airbox, but ppl have been posting on the FB E46 M3 group that his tune has apparently been blowing up some S54 engines?

Not a dumb question, I should have clarified that better. The company is called HTE Performance

I'm running an HTE "canned'" tune, it's excellent. Entire experience was great. Search around and you'll find TTFS is not what you want to do.

Does that Turner box use the same shaped filter as the OE part?

Yes, and funny enough, the OE style filter fits and seals better on the Turner box versus Karb. Karb stopped making a carbon frame for the filter a while back. The ITG foam filter is probably a better fit for the Karb airbox and that is what they sell.

                              There is 1 more option:
                              OEM Carbon Box from Karbonius
BMW E46 OEM STYLE AIRBOX, CSL Airbox is one of the most demanded improvements among BMW M3 E46 enthusiastic. That is both for performance gain, and for sound it brings to car. On the other hand, it is a laborious, time-consuming and expensive modification. For those who are looking for similar sound to CSL airbox but do not look for HP gain, we have developed the Karbonius OEM Style S54 airbox. It is a simplified version of CSL airbox, that, apart from louder sound to engine (+12 dB compared to plastic OEM) gives awesome appearance and easy installation using stock elbow and MAF. No needed to install any additional hardware or remap. *In SMG version, genuine BMW CSL SMG expansion tank needed. Regarding power increase, we got +4HP in recent dyno test comparing with OEM airbox. Not really significant considering that dyno can have a 2% margin error. In conclusion, and pending new test in future, we can say no significant power increase and no HP loss. As usual, piece manufactured 100% in carbon fiber prepreg, cured in autoclave in our facilities in Spain (EU) under strict quality requirement and for qualified stuff. Kit Includes: • Airbox • CNC machine-made items of anodized aluminium • Stainless-steel screws • Certificate of authenticity Characteristics: • Similar sound to CSL airbox • No remap needed • 100% Carbon Prepreg • Cured in autoclave • High gloss UV protection varnish • Perfect fit. No adjustment required • 2 years guarantee Fitment: • BMW E46 M3 • BMW E85/E86 Z4M

Get some of the carbon box sound without needing to tune or modify DME.
