My real concern is not the 25% itself, but whether that impacts the manufacturer's decision to make and export the part at all. NLA parts is already a bigger problem than parts prices, and I worry about this making that worse. Other than that, the point is well taken, what's a few more dollars on an already expensive part for an already expensive hobby?

I just spent $10K on a set of wheels from Canada today. Another $2500 blown on taxes would've def held me off from this frivolous purchase. With tires and CA sales tax it would've gone from $12.5K to $16K or $3.5K+ to the gov FOR NOTHING.

I have been enjoying the CAD and JPY exchange rates though, but not on car parts... slightly off topic but the current madness hasn't been all bad.

Tariffs should be the same no?

That could be somewhat misleading because BMW is now the leading soccer mom-mobile seller and those SUVs are produced in the US. Depending on how far reaching the tariffs go, BMW could be one of the cheaper SUVs available!

Here is the updated China tariff list from March 6: https://hts.usitc.gov/reststop/file?...hina%20Tariffs

Some may argue that the tariffs imposed on European auto parts will differ because “China”, but… we’ll only know until the HTS code list is out. Google your favorite imported part’s HTS code and see if it falls on this China tariff list! There’s already a 20% ad valorem.

This might be taking this thread to a dark place but f' it.

I haven't been spending shit since covid and I've never saved more money. I moved to Houston in 2019 and rented a house while I figure out where we wanted to end up living. Then covid hit. I've literally froze all big spending since. My hobbies have been cost to revenue neutral - composites work, selling stuff, and being an ice hockey referee. I've been at the track a lot less in 2021 to 2024.

I think this economy is doomed and [donning the tin foil hat] Trump needs this economy to crash now so he has time to fix it before mid-terms. It is literally being held up by debt spending. The GDP would be something like -5% last year without deficit spending. And the math just doesn't work with inflation, wages, and growing consumer debt. Smart people watch the bond markets - yields are starting to fall. Buffet has a massive cash pile. I'll admit...I'm much more of a conspiracy theorist since covid - not sure if it was the vaccine or what...lol

It’s no dark place, it’s based in observation. I work in an industry that relies heavily on foreign production and I’ve been actively working to move production to the US. We ship thousands of products daily and get some good visibility on what’s about to happen. As soon as the new administration came into office we worked pretty diligently to secure trade deals with our current production partners and started buying machinery to place in the Midwest and some parts of Los Angeles.

We understand the short-term implications on consumer spending and as a hobbyist the 25% tariffs seem really unfair, but as a manufacturer and seller of consumer products we actually like that we’re working with an administration that is supportive of the high cost of production here in the US. We’re starting with the cheapest production items for which we have the highest margin to begin our domestic production journey, but we’ll get there.

How? Schmiedmann is not in USA. Why would they increase their prices?

Right - none of these foreign exporters are shipping DDP so duty is still the burden of the importer.

No, you just started thinking differently... I don't see anything crashed today being rebuilt in two years so if that's what people are thinking they're dumber than I thought.

But people seem to think the economy is strong enough today to withstand some turbulence, so it's now or never to play a strong hand. Maybe that's right, maybe it's wrong but either way we'll have to live through it.

I see an economy that's been reliant on cheap debt (0% Fed) and little else since 9/11 so we don't even know how it deals with rates as high as they are, much less additional turbulence. No one pays me to think about this stuff -- well actually they do; no one elected me to think about it -- but I'm like Buffet stockpiling cash. You want to be a buyer when everyone is selling, so we'll see.

But what is the instrument to collect from individuals? Customs? Not gonna happen.

It’s just going to come from the shipping service - FedEx, UPS, DHL all have some mechanism to enforce duties either through a post-delivery invoice or a pre-delivery payment. I had to pay for duties on exhaust parts from Poland and DHL placed a delivery exception on my shipment until I paid the required amount.
