I've been chasing pad dragging issues for about a year and a half. Symptoms were the brakes not releasing the wheels to free spin, premature and uneven inner/outer front pad wear, and super loud humming on the highway. This persisted through two sets of calipers and has driven me nuts.
I broke down and ordered SS pistons as I was at my wit's end but right before installing them, I decided to pull the Porsche backing plates that I'd added to my textar (OE) 996 brake pads. Textars come with a built in anti-squeal that's not super effective, where the Porsche ones that go into the piston cups work pretty well for reducing brake noise.
Well, it turns out combining them is a bad idea. My pad dragging issues are finally gone and I can stop cursing the 996 brakes. Pedal feel is even a little better. Plus, I can swap pads without removing the calipers now.
First time out the pads made noise coming to a stop, hitting all of the contact surfaces with sil-glyde seems to be keeping it at bay for now.
So there you have it, don't spend the extra money to get the fancy Porsche anti-squeal pads and make your brakes worse. Learn from my mistake.
