PSA: Don't add Porsche anti-squeal pads to your 996 brakes

I've been chasing pad dragging issues for about a year and a half. Symptoms were the brakes not releasing the wheels to free spin, premature and uneven inner/outer front pad wear, and super loud humming on the highway. This persisted through two sets of calipers and has driven me nuts.

I broke down and ordered SS pistons as I was at my wit's end but right before installing them, I decided to pull the Porsche backing plates that I'd added to my textar (OE) 996 brake pads. Textars come with a built in anti-squeal that's not super effective, where the Porsche ones that go into the piston cups work pretty well for reducing brake noise.

Well, it turns out combining them is a bad idea. My pad dragging issues are finally gone and I can stop cursing the 996 brakes. Pedal feel is even a little better. Plus, I can swap pads without removing the calipers now.

First time out the pads made noise coming to a stop, hitting all of the contact surfaces with sil-glyde seems to be keeping it at bay for now.

So there you have it, don't spend the extra money to get the fancy Porsche anti-squeal pads and make your brakes worse. Learn from my mistake.

Interesting that factory porsche pads with factory porsche calipers kind of sucks.

Same rotor thickness as the Porsche?

I know the Stoptech ST40 pad shape is also used on some Porsche OE Brembo calipers come in different thicknesses. You can get 18mm, 17mm and 16.5mm. 18mm pads won't fit a new-ish rotor without a disastrous and life shortening pad shaving operation. I tried to tell the dude to not worry about it but he insisted...what customer service!

Off the top of my head I don’t remember, but based on the pad retainers and space available when dropping new pads in with new rotors, it’s at least within a couple millimeters if not the same.

Good to know. I'm trying to find a 996 kit at the moment.

Was this happening on the front and the rear?

I just installed 996 rears with fresh anti-squeal damper/shims. Initial few test drive have no noise or funny issues like that...outside of a couple bleeder plugs seeping. 😠

BTW I use ceramic grease on metal to metal contact. Silglyde just for rubber to metal surfaces like sliding pins on OE style calipers.

Just the fronts presented symptoms, although I removed the rears as well just to be sure.

Might have to try ceramic grease as I’ve still got noise again coming to a stop. Thanks!

                Old, not obsolete.

Are they seeping at the base of the threads or through the hole in the center of the bleeder? If it's the former, then they might be fine. Double check for this: https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/m...329#post231329

                    Yep! Those are the perpetrators.
