    Review: HTE Tuning

I made some changes this winter that necessitated a new tune (higher flow injectors, colder plugs). I decided to take the opportunity to wipe years of continual tune changes and start from a fresh (CSL) stock tune.

Hassan (HTE) tuned my best friend’s car 2-3 years ago, and I was always impressed how much it felt like a stock car (only with more power). His car, far and away, felt the most “stock” feeling (in the good way) of any tuned car I’ve driven. So, I decided to go that route, as well.

    My full hardware setup:
    CSL Engine management, with MAP
    OEM CSL Airbox, no flap
    Higher flow injectors (Bosch 0280156063)
One step colder plugs (Denso ixu27)
    Schrick 280/272 cams
SS V1 stepped headers (with a bosch wideband installed in an extra bung for data logging)
    SS HJS catted section 1
SS Twin tube resonated Section 2
    SS Street muffler

The injectors really threw everything for a loop compared to a “normal” tune, but Hassan was great. He had a general idea of where they would be from previous cars, but we played it safe—exactly what I want.

First, fired it up and monitored AFRs at idle. All good.
Next, fire it up and monitor AFRs while holding it at 2000 rpm. Also good.

Then, the part that I think really has set this tune apart from every previous tune I’ve had—road tuning! Every previous tune I’ve had has been WOT runs on the dyno. He spent way longer with me than I would have expected, working over and refining the tune as I drove around. Full throttle, all sorts of partial throttle, all RPM. The car feels freaking great—never stumbles, pulls from all RPM, blips readily/enthusiastically, etc. I still intend to try the drivability spreadsheet for fun (and because it’ll haunt me forever if I don’t), but I am dubious there’s room for improvement at this point.

I also have no doubt this tune is safe. Knock sensors are left at stock values, and we have a nice, safe 12.5 AFR from ~5500rpm to redline to keep it cool and knock free on track.

Haven’t had it in on a dyno, because I frankly don’t care so long as it drives correctly, but the car feels STRONG.

    10/10, would buy again.

What is the flow rate of the your injectors (lazy to google), I have the 550cc ones that I'm waiting to install. With the injectors installed any notes on the character of the car (power, pickup, driveability - although these can also be attributed to Hassan's work).

No surprise about HTE, it will be my 4th time getting a tune from him.

PS googled 386cc Audi TT injectors, about 100-120cc over a stock injector (stock being 260-280cc)

I just had Hassan do an Alpha-N tune on my car as well for CSL airbox, I also have the higher flow Bosch injectors and honestly car drives great. Was expecting some hiccups or part throttle issues and it's pretty impressive how close to stock he was able to make the car feel on an Alpha-N tune.

I'm running HTE "canned" tune for 2 years (?) now since my SS install. Love it!

Ian, what is involved in the road tune? I'd like to have one done as I feel this is the best way to tune for my needs, primarily road use. I plan emailing Hassan but I am curious what that process is like. Thanks.

Basically you need a way to log AFRs, RPM, and load. Then you drive around in the style you want to tweak and he updates the tune based on what the logs show.

I used BMWLogger. Were I doing it again, I’d use Testo.

What made you decide on the larger injectors? I have pretty much the same setup minus the injectors and colder plugs. I've been thinking about going to larger injectors and a re-tune after I swap from catless to HJS catted sec 1.

Shoutout Hassan’s follow-up as well. I used a canned tune and I had a few running issues since my car was manual swapped and he took care of every issue I brought up. Check engine light, running rich? Fixed it. Cold start stumble? Fixed it. Also knew when not to fix as I had a problem with my car not starting on first crank but would immediately start up on second crank and he told me it wasn’t tune related and lo and behold after searching, there was service bulletin for that issue. I’m running Alpha-N and the car runs clean and performs great!

I have 288/280 cammed S54 with exhaust head porting, 12.1 compr ratio and i'm running on stock injectors pretty fine. HTE tuned) all is perfect except choppy idle with some misfires due to porting but it is due to my config. Hassan is great tuner. Running 12.3-12.5 AFR on WOT

+1 on HTE, been a few years, car runs as if it came from the factory (running alpha-n). He did a re-tune when I switched out my fuel pump, found another nice amount of WHP from there.

How much power are you putting down with your HTE tune? I pretty much have the same setup and am going to be contacting Hassan for a tune.
