4.1 LSD on SMG car... Coding needed?

Slightly entertaining the idea of doing a 4.1.

This seems like something that is probably already ironed out, but I can't seem to search out specific info. I am reading that coding is needed, but also see examples of it being fine without.

If so, does anyone know what the process is to code? I won't be lucky enough for this to be an option box for a module through say PA Soft, right haha? My car currently has the CSL SMG software if it matters.

    ECU tune.

MSS5X binary modification tool can do it with a check box.

The easiest DIY way is to pull the DME file (.bin) yourself using BMWFlash or MSSFlasher and modify with Martyn's tool. https://www.ecuworx.co.uk/2015/05/18...ificationtool/

Thank you both! I checked out the link, sounds pretty straightforward. I am confused haha, how is all of this free? The license request is where I pay something right hahah?

Looks like I'll be adding to the car stuff laptop then. DIS/INPA, PA Soft, and now this.

I am guessing the cable I have for DIS/INPA should work for this?

Neither of us stated it being free.

Martyn's tool is a paid tool. Less than $50 USD, mssflasher is not free. BMWFlasher is free for this since not flashing a full. MSSFlasher has some benefits BMWFlasher does not have

A regular cable that is used for INPA is fine for this. Please be diligent in your research and when modifying your DME.

4.1 should be fine. I know of one example where someone had an issue with 4.44. I think terra said that 4.25 was the limit for the factory DME.

For this, might as well use BMWflasher (free).

MSS5X Binary modification tool lets you load up files and play with the software for free, but to actually flash it on the car you have to pay for a license.

Thanks everyone! Yeah I didn't think you guys were saying it was free. I browsed their site a bit, and it wasn't abundantly clear, so I was like no way is this free hahah.

I am unsure if you know this but just wanted to say that I have a 4.10 diff in my SMG vert and have not tuned nor changed the stock parameters. My car runs fine without any issues. I believe tuning is only needed if your running a 4.10 with SMG and drive it in the auto mode within the higher drivelogic settings. The SMG computer will sometimes not shift automatically into the next gear at redline.

If you drive in manual mode, like I always do, then the tuning isn't really necessary.

Also what part of outside of Philadelphia?

                      4.10 and SMG here.
No tune in the beginning and everything was fine.
I eventually re coded the ECU to tell it it had a 4.10 rear end but no difference to be honest.

So I tracked down Olza and have asked him to rejoin this forum. He has moved on from the E46 platform so is no longer involved with it. In order to ensure his knowledge isn’t lost I purchased his SMG disassembly files and software from him with the goal of further developing it with my friend here in New Zealand with the

Yeah man that'd be great! I hope you know of a good place that can do a good alignment and corner balance around us.
