Actually they do. The TPMS uses the wheel speed sensors to differentiate individual tire pressures through their rpm’s.

This isn't what the post he quoted was referring to:

There are little hand held scanners that test TPMS Sensors. Use that instead of wasting money. You may have damaged the sensor during the blowout but the tire isn't shreaded so you may be in luck. It takes about 3 minutes to test all 4 sensors. They send out a specific frequency to a reciever in your car. It's typically 433Mhz sent out. Each one must be programmed to the car. Receivers can typically recieve other frequencies but if a different frequency is used for one sensor, that may cause a problem, confusing the module.
The RF sensors started with the E9X cars. Luckily you can run without them and code the cars back to the same FTM system the E46 uses.

It doesn’t matter. You guys are caught up on semantics for the sake of getting brownie points. If you really see an error, go ahead and call him/her/them out and have the proper answer. Otherwise, you’re just adding to the confusion.

There is no proper answer to that error, because there are no RF sensors in the wheels therefore there is no handheld receiver that you can use to read and/or test TPM sensors that do not exist. If the wheel speed sensors in these cars are off my understanding is that it will set off errors in the ABS as well. I think it's important for someone who comes across this thread to not be confused that there are modern-style radio frequency sensors in their car that do not exist, but maybe that's just me.

I prefer the E46 system over typical TPMS systems that require sensor/battery upkeep.

OP the answer isn't in an aftermarket system. Save your money and put it to better tires and heed the warnings. The E46 system works.

So the conclusion is: There is no sensor that functions solely as a TPMS, but there IS a TPMS system embedded into the wheel speed sensors?

                From the manual:

As you drive, the Flat Tire Monitor
keeps track of pressure levels in all four
tires. The system alerts you whenever
the inflation pressure of a tire falls sig-
nificantly below the pressure of another
                tire.
Controlling the tire pressure is based
on monitoring the rpm that the tires
have relative to each other. A flat tire is
detected and reported because the rpm
                suddenly deviate drastically from one
                another.
So it's not that the wheel speed sensors have something special that can tell tire pressure, but rather that they're used to deduce if a tire is low. If the rpms reported by the wheel speed sensors are different (by enough), then a tire is probably low.

Cool. So the tire pressure is derived from the relative rotation rates of the wheels. Hence the wheel speed sensors... Thanks

                    Yup exactly.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Couple of notes, although the tires are not the most expensive brand, they are not expired by any means, and plenty of life left so i didnt see a reason to change them. The reviews for the gmax rs were good. I dont track the car so it doesnt see much wheel spin or drifting.

The car is in the shop now getting michelin pilot 4s tires.
they also said the rest of the tires dont need changing, but im doing all four anyway 🙂

Wheel spin and drifting have nothing to do with tracking a car.

Good thing you're changing all 4. Mixing tire compounds is a VERY bad idea.
