      3. If the car is stopped, parked, it has no issues doing into gear gates..
      1. 1st to 6th doesn't have their own gate. There are 3 gates total for 1/2, 3/4, 5/6. If it was in 1st, then the shift rod was already in the 2nd gate (1/2 gate) so you were already in 2nd gate and no need to find it.

      2. same as above, that you're already in 3/4 gate as it's ok shifting in 4th. Btw, 3/4 is the gate that the shifter always in when in neutral.

      3. Engine running or not?

        1. and 2. Then to your points about already being in the gate: a shift from 1 to 2, I will not be able to fully engage the 2nd gear gate ie. the travel to the "final" position is shortened. If I keep my hand on the lever then the trans will grind meaning not fully engaged?
        3. Not running.

What are my options here realistically, its a very frustrating issue. Do I find a used low mile SMG or replace every detent spring etc as mentioned earlier in this thread? I would lean towards the latter option but I also dont have money to light on fire.

My guess...you have bad detents and some worn synchros.

I think SMG gearboxes are even sketchy nowadays. I think reman 420g's are like $15k? I have a hard time trusting anyone to rebuild these. If it is a track car, consider a 5 speed swap. Or maybe the non-M 6 speed.

1&2. grinding means the clutch is not completely disengaged and so the input shaft still spinning when you tried to engage the gears. Based on what you wrote, somehow the clutch disenaged fine at lower rpm but still partially engaged at higher rpm. Is it new clutch?

            3. shift fine with engine off: this proves my theory about clutch didn't disengage --> blocked the gear shift and grinding.
