Got this setup coming in any minute now.
I'm tracking the thread is a M10 x 1.
I checked the forum and didn't get confirmation on the external thread start to the flat part where the crush washer contact.
Looking for confirmation:
- the 30mm in the picture: is it will enough thread length for the setup?
- what is the cold idle temp pressure should be? I'm tracking the sweet spot I need to be at at warm idle is 1500psi -1700psi? Planning to get at 1600psi if I need to adjust it.
Will post a status update.

The factory VANOS oil line banjo bolt for the BMW E46 M3 (S54 engine) has the following exact specifications: [1, 2]- Thread Size & Pitch: M10 x 1.0 mm (Fine thread)
- Total Length: 19 mm
- Thread Length: Approximately 11 mm
- BMW Factory Part Number: 07119905175 (Listed as a "Hollow Bolt")
- Crush Washer Specification: Requires A10x13,5-CU copper crush washers (10mm inner diameter)
- Target Operating Pressure: The internal S54 VANOS system is regulated to a target pressure of 100 bar to 115 bar (approx. 1,450 to 1,660 psi)

The issue isn’t your DCAN cable or your INPA installation. On the E46 M3/S54, INPA doesn’t expose the actual VANOS test like you see in some of the non-M E46 videos. It can show live VANOS/adaptation data, but the functional VANOS test is normally done through DIS/ISTA or Tool32. (Nam3 Forum)
If you already have INPA working, I’d leave the installation alone. For the S54, Tool32 can access the MSS54 VANOS jobs directly, including reaction time, end-stop and leak/holding tests. The relevant PRG is mss54ds0.prg. (Nam3 Forum)
So you’re probably not missing a setting in INPA; that VANOS button simply isn’t available for the S54 in the standard INPA script.

Here's the latest update,
Made a VANOS pressure reading apparatus.
My suspicion is right:
- Low pressure reading to the tune of 3 bars (essentially engine pressure) -> refer to picture.
- Info on the adapter: I ended up cutting 7mm from the thread start to match the OEM banjo bolt.
Plan (with status)
- VANOS test (using toolset32) -> FAIL (times out)
- valve block swap -> Done (PASS) Beisan
- solenoid valve replacement -> Done (PASS) Beisan
- DME to solenoid resistance check -> Done (PASS)
- VANOS pressure test -> FAIL
- Check the exhaust sprocket hub -> not broken (Beisan)
- Check the exhaust upper chain guide -> not broken (Beisan)
- Check cam sprockets bolts -> not broken (at the least the hex head ones)
Next:
- VANOS high pressure line -> RE replacement in the mail
- VANOS Accumulator -> OEM replacement in the mail
- Confirm proper timing
Any ideas on what to check is greatly appreciated!
