I sure hope I don't have to reset timing. Planning on doing valve adj. and Vanos lockdown so I'll be in there anyway but not ready to do that just yet as I am not confident enough in my understanding of the procedures.
I am also not confident in my local indy shop's ability to perform such procedures. They won't rebuild vanos anyway, thats fine, just means I get to learn more and spend less...so long as I don't bend valves/ruin my pistons! Sure hope this all SW related, then I can stop dicking around til' 1am every night reading/worring.

Checking and adjusting the offset in the ecu will take 5 minutes. You said the vanos was fine prior the CSL ECU so your physical timing will not have changed just by switching the ECU.

I read it the other way. You could actually be a bit sloppy in your physical timing, and the ECU can adjust +/- 8.

I know the timing wouldn't have changed, its just Kassel is so adamant they have US spec. offsets in their tunes I am starting to second guess myself.
I did make a point of pulling codes before the swap, it wasn't the day of the swap but about 5 days beforehand.
I was pulling codes weekly up until the swap because I had an EGT sensor error so I was monitoring that. I am not %100 certain it happened after the DME swap but I am very confident that is indeed the case.

If you read your tune and pull it up in TunerPro (no need to make any changes) you can confirm whether or not it has the correct offsets for stock cams. Just follow what Martyn said and make sure K_EVAN1_OFFSET and K_AVAN1_OFFSET match.

That's what I understood as well.

Terra, Martyn, and others who have more experience with this than me, am I correct in saying the +-8º is how much the VANOS can adapt to a (slightly) mistimed engine, but the actual VANOS adjustment range is a separate value that is not affected by these adaptations?

That is my understanding based on vanos test results. Now if the car is simply lying about how far it’s moving the cam, perhaps not.

Hey Martyn, I am having problems in that I'm not sure which is which. Yours says "intake" or "exhaust" Vanos Offset, mine is just saying AVAN or EVAN and your screen shot shows a compare bin, mine does not.
Is "AVAN1" Exhaust and "EVAN1" Intake?
I loaded up another partial read and that was from my stock US DME, so my thoughts that the CSL flashed DME showed up differently than yours in TunerPro because its "in German" seem to be misguided. Were you using a different XDF than the one I got, does it matter?

Edit: Also the XDF I downloaded via your link was all text and I saved it into notepad. When I search for it in TunerPro I have to set the browse in the drop down to "all files" for it to show as opposed to "XDF Files". I did change the extension to .xdf but it still reads in windows as "...".xdf.txt
If you read the top of TunerPro in my screen shot you will see what I am referring to.
Thanks for your help, this stuff is beyond me currently. But I'd like to learn.

Those offsets in your screenshot are for CSL cams, as suspected they weren’t changed in your tune.

Nice man. I just got DIS on a laptop tonight so hopefully I'll be able to do that shortly! I'm so far in the weeds I can't see but I am still having fun.

So I reset the values to what Martyn posted then flashed the DME, reset adaptations and cleared the error code (94) for the inlet vanos.
After a 30 min. drive in the first four gears and running it up to about 7.5k max a few times I read the adaptations. Inlet seems a bit high,, anyways here are the results:

                              At least it's adapting now!

Your ignition adapts look good, no timing being pulled so that's a bonus too.

Should this tool be used right after driving or while the engine is running?

last time i plugged it in (car not running), my inlet was 0, but I don't have csl software.
