What Ian said. I did it mostly for weight savings as I was competing heavily in Bimmer Challenge and Global Time Attack. All the lighter, faster guys had AC delete and ZF swaps. I've since gone back to 6 speed. The ZF felt like shit even with new detents, bushings, etc.

Used to be able to get a ZF for $250-$500. Now its $500-$800 which isn't terrible. Used to be able to make it essentially a no-cost swap.

In addition to the other points, there are a lot more clutch options for the ZF 5 speed which don't cost an arm and a leg. Most popular is the E34 M5 clutch and a Sach HD pressure plate.

As far as the feel of the gearbox, a fresh ZF will be WAY better than a fresh 420g. That's one thing I noticed back in the 2000's. The ZFs are all over 20 years and maybe 30 years old so there is a lot of variance in the condition of the internals.

That sounds weak...lol Making the car track only makes weight loss decisions easy but quite difficult for a street car especially if it can't be undone.

The carbon cabin filter housing would be a good weight loss opportunity. You could remove all of the rear speakers and use a nice neo mag midbass in the front doors which doesn't cost a lot and will cut some weight.

The one good thing about carbon panels - no door dings!

Sound deadnening is like 30lbs, I prefer to remove it and keep more interior parts instead

Complete audio with wiring harness can be removed and just get a Bluetooth speakers and put it on passanger seat for longer ride!

Door airbags can be removed and coded like CSL.

You can drill holes into trunk hinges, cut some sheet metal and drill holes into dash bar. On the lower steering wheel cover, you can drill plastic rivets and remove the foam and metal plate. Remove the foam from dash bar, remove some foam under floor carpet.

Can also use titanium hardware!

I don't think I will be pulling the interior out to thin out the wiring harness, at least not yet.

Pretty sure the door airbags are gone since the car has Hard Motorsports door panels.

people claim the 5 speed is more reliable, but I think that’s bogus-- 420g is a tank, and all the 5’s seem to develop 5th gear lean.

Agreed, I also think having that extra gear is worth the weight penalty.

Its been years. I remember Pioneer and Alpine making a reasonably priced mid. I used a pair of Hybrid Audio mids which were outstanding but they aren't cheap.

I need to reweigh my car soon. 3020lbs with 240lbs of ballast, I weigh 223, and 30l of fuel.

30l fuel x 1.7 lb/l = 51 lbs. 3020 - 240 - 223 - 51 = 2506lbs. I'm about the install a CF dash...so should be right at 2500lbs while slowly moving the CG rearward - 50.9% Front weight distribution.

Everything else is how the car came from the factory.

I usually keep a jug of coolant and some quarts of atf and oil in the engine bay drug bin. I run with it on track like that, so I assume this weight is with that in there. I want to say this was half a tank, but I can't find my notes. This was with the stock airbox.
