I have to wait until Saturday to get help to push it up on the four post lift. I'll be pulling the oil pan center cover and hopefully will find it with the boroscope and get it with a bendy magnet. I am so bummed about the prospect of pulling the pan and not even doing the rod bearings. After this little episode I won't even go there for the time being. I'll post up the results!

I’d pull the cam off before pulling the oil pan. There’s a lot of hiding spots in the head. It’s probably lodged under the follower shaft.

But definitely find it and confirm you have all of the pieces before turning the motor over.

This is a 1" piece, I would think that would not be able to find it's way under there and if so would be visible.

You must believe. I think it’s not uncommon to drop a shim and then the tech can’t find it and move on. I’ve torn down a couple of S54s. I found an extra shim in the head in 2 engines.

I sure hope your right! I do trust your experience over mine and will make a very concerted effort in the head area before moving on.

Its just that that cam hole is 100% in line with the hole that the grate broke over.

There’s a valley that is really hard to see with the cam installed. I’d try running a pickup tool under the cam to see if it picks up something.

Also...Is the cam pin steel or stainless steel? Might have an issue trying to use a magnet if it fell down the hole if it’s stainless

Not fully off topic, but fun fact, not all stainless steels are magnetic (i.e. some are magnetic). Depends on concentration of iron vs nickel/chromium.

ID:	77692 I hope the broken piece is able to do this and it isn't just picking up on other metals under the black area you grab.

Maybe it's just the lighting, but I swear it looks like there's a broken piece of pin lodged in your other cam there?

Seriously...it does look like it is stuck in the cam.

This would be an amazing discovery before tearing into oil pan. Nice eyes terra.

                                🤞
