Need help doing vanos test with INPA

    Exhaust side looks fine. It's the intake side that looks like it has a mechanical issue.
    The first thing in your log it commands the intake to -10, the result it wants to see is 0, the result you get is 15, so the cam isn’t able to retard all the way it wants to, the computer obviously knows this so no wonder it sets a code.

    The second thing wrong with your log is the adjustment times for the intake being just 0, I think this is just a result of the same issue since it doesn’t make sense measuring the adjustment time for an adjustment that doesn’t have the entire proper range available to it.

    So yeah, disassemble and figure out what went wrong.

      All i need is the same cable I use for INPA to conduct this test?
      The car needs to be idling to run the test?

        Yeah, same cable and idle, as i remember- coolant and oil temp above ~60

            Looks fine. Reaction time is really good.
            intake &exhaust camshafts is 1 degree out of spec. But I wouldn't bother. 1 degree is fine.

                Done several tests- Intake cam is stable from -1 to 59, exhaust has different angles- first as i see- adaptation on exhaust cam is -8, so in tests i've seen different results- first test on exhaust where target is -10 fact angles was: -3, -5, -8, +10 +15 +13 etc, cam is always has different start position, when second test in advance- +40, +38, +37 etc. Engine has 288/280 shrick cams and no error codes at all, is it could be solenoids pack issue or mecanical wrong timed exhaust cam? will do retiming soon, but now i aware of vanos- should i change it or it is only timing issue

                  Your exhaust camshaft does not reach the end stops (0 - 45). It also doesn't use the full range (+45 degrees). Doubt it would be a timing issue. More solenoids and or piston seals.

                    Yeah, always different values in each test, already installed beisan kit on mechanical vanos part, didnt maintaned solenoids. Now i'm in doubts- buy new coil pack or whole vanos module, but ECU didnt show any error codes on vanos or camhaft position at all

                      Thanks Tomba for putting together the test file, it's super helpful. I couldn't get the VANOS tests in INPA since I have a K+DCAN cable and DIS didn't show VANOS tests, so your test file was perfect for me!

                      I recently did a full VANOS rebuild using Beisan components (solenoid pack, all seals, pump disk, pressure regulator filter, cleaned vanos valve/manifold, etc) and ran the tests with a fully warmed up engine with 100 miles on it since the rebuild.

                      It looks like angles and reaction time look good. I did rerun it and the intake showed 60 instead of 59; either way, it doesn't seem concerning. I actually had a hard time with timing the intake. It kept being off a little bit, but sapote had some great advice and discussion on another thread on how to get it shored up. So also, thank you sapote!

                      The only thing I don't understand is the leak test (DICHTHEIT/dichtheitsprüfung) results. It says that both intake and exhaust both drifted prematurely (Einheit vorzeitig weggedriftet). Is this actually a problem or does it always say this? Looking at all the other post they all seem to say this.

                          The dichtheid test, I already posted my suspicion on this. Maybe it needs to be set differently. I do had a few cars in the past who succeeded the test flawlessly. Newer ECUs have the ability to show the actual measured values during such tests. For the MSS54 I haven't found it yet.
                          Before the test the VANOS piston might need to move up (advance) then close both control valves (advance & retard) and observe the drift. A leak free system shouldn't drift to much. But I do suspect it is set correctly once the test it self is started.
                          You can try the following,
                          1. STEUERN_EVANOS1_FRUEHANSCHLAG and then,
                          2. STEUERN_EVANOS1_DICHTHEIT

                          Other option would be to activate the solenoids on your own with a separate device to advance with the engine speed lifted [STEUERN_LLS_TESTDREHZAHL] and then observe how the actual camshaft is moving once you don't activate them [STATUS_EVANOS1_IST] for intake, I would suggest TestO with DS2 Serial job for exhaust as I can't find the actual exhaust vanos position it in the job list.

                          Numbers do look good in your result.

                            I ran those two tests, FRUEHANSCHLAG (early stop?) then DICHTHEIT (leak test) on a warm engine.
                            Intake and exhaust both gave status "Messung beendet, Soll-/Istwert-Vergleich ausfuehren" ("Measurement finished, carry out setpoint/actual value comparison") and setpoint and actual are within 5 degrees, so it seems leak/drift is okay!

                                Hi! Intake camshaft is out of spec on 2 degrees but here shouldnt be any issues, but it not work in full 60 degrees, 59 only, same with exhaust- position is good but 47 degrees, should be 48. Reaction time is good!
