They didn't say it was DCT I don't think. I think it was SMG. Still pretty cool though.

Someone needs to make a one piece plenum with larger diameter inlets like the one in the CSL. Would be super cool

My buddies got 2 E60 M5's, one has the cats gutted and straight pipes the rest of the way, it truly is a glorious sound.

Pretty close or equal to the sound of the CSL intake imo. I'm also warming up to the looks of them as of late, never thought I would say that.

It is definitely a car you buy solely for the engine (which I do understand) but I like nothing else about it, don't like the seats, interior, or exterior. Its like an athletic fat girl, loads of fun but then you have to stare at it for a decade.

I owned an e60m5 6MT for a while. And the looks grew on me. But sure, it's not the prettiest car in the world. And yeah it's 4000 pounds, but it doesn't really feel like it. Either way, girl had loonnnggg legs though, let me tell you. It was very quick. Mine had every option down to the individual stereo, heated and cooled this and that, leather and alcantara wrapped everything.

My favorite trip was the day my wife and I and our two daughters drove up to the big LA cars and coffee when I lived down in San Diego. Drove up the i5 in complete comfort listening to the amazing stereo - It's a quiet 5-series after all. Did the whole cars and coffee deal, had brunch, and then went up and over Ortegra hwy for the trip home. Amazingly there was no traffic and we rippppeedddd up and over Ortegra, v10 blaring (I had a modified exhaust which sounded incredible). What an absolutely lunatic of a car. Total Jekyll and Hyde. I've never owned anything else so comfortably and borning yet insanely exciting and dynamic as the e60m5. Looks be damned, it's an amazing car.

It was a bucket-list car for me. I'm glad I owned one, and I recommend you all do the same.

The e60 M5 engine is spectacular.
The e60 is the only aluminum chassis bmw.
The e60 is the only M5 with actually good steering.
The e60 has the most sporty/most dynamic chassis of any gen M5.

…. it’a also ugliest, has one of BMW’s worst interiors, and not super reliable.

The aluminum chassis thing always gets me. Incredible they did that but I'd still take the v8 e46 m3 csl. Looks so good, inside and out, in addition to the glorious noise of that v8.

Yup! Hard to beat the exhaust sound of a V10. The M5 CSL
also combines my two favorite engine noises: ITB intake bark and V10 exhaust.

Sidenote for any music nerds on here:
I recently found this article that explores the music theory behind the exhaust note of different engine configurations and thought it was really cool. Makes sense that I like the V10 sound so much, considering it's essentially just a major third.

While I’m a huge petrolhead, I’m also a musician, and I’ve decided to combine these two passions to explain why car engines sound the way they do. I hope that even if you aren’t musical, you can still get something out of this blog. The fundamental note In a car engine, the crankshaft turns which provides a fundamental tone. The pitch of this tone depends on the speed of the engine. This is why a Formula One car usually has a higher pitched sound than a normal car. This diagram shows how the engine sounds vary:
