      Hi - I know this thread has gone quiet, but wondering what is best practice here. I have a 2005 and will start with modified CSL software (Terra). If I simply use the OEM CSL vent hose, should I be doing anything else here?

          Thanks, what do folks do with the electronic valve sensor that plugged into the stock vent hose? Not sure where to tuck that away if I don't want to completely unhook it from the ECU

            You can zip tie it under the cowl area where you can't see it.

                  The snorkel is OEM, I wanted the ability to run the flap, mainly just because it thought it was cool and something to do as well

                    wow! 110% effort.

                    I am debating canceling the karb snorkel and getting the haimus snorkel just because it looks more OEM. not sure i can cough up $1700-2000 more for OEM snorkel/flap

                      That is what I did since I was after the more OE look of the matte black plastic. Did a small write up here since it wasn't confirmed anywhere that they fit up together.

                      Anybody order from Karb somewhat recently? They're adding a 107 euro "fees" line item to the invoice. I don't have a line of communication with them, so I'm just asking here if that's normal. Maybe duties? Thanks


                      They fit up like they're designed for eachother, but the Haimus snorkel is definitely not Karb level quality, the finish is a bit meh and you'll need to source OEM bolts since the supplied hardware doesn't work with the Karb.

                          Yep 100%, I much prefer the look and it's still a decent chunk cheaper.

                          To be clear the actual construction of the snorkel is quite good, mine just had a few imperfections in the surface finish since the paint on it is very soft. Eventually I'll repaint it and I'll be 100% satisfied.

                            I created this account just to answer the initial question about what is the solenoid valve used for on the newer S54s PCV design.
                            This PCV newer design is to get vacuum from the air rail on low throttle / idle to suck gases from the engine crankcase towards the intake.

                            The electrically actuated valve is meant to pulse consistently to ensure the following:
                            1- Act like a pump (compressor with its pulsing mechanism)
                            2- Gases do not travel back to the air rail
                            3- Modulating the amount of "allowed" vacuum (20 inHg is alot for CCV)
                            4- Further reduce the emissions volume of the S54 engine to comply with newer regulatory bodies around emissions by tackling the idle/low throttle evacuation of gas scenario

                            Blow by is not the only issue here, many engines in good shape don't have enough blow by to make it worthwhile. The gases being evacuated in this scenario are oil vapor from heat and a little blow by residue from WOT application before you lift off throttle.
                            Cars that are not driven hard all the time still gunk up the S54 instake manifold, valves, chambers, etc. and this is a resolution to that issue.

                            In short, this is the additional security BMW put on low throttle / idle to secure constant evacuation of gases from the crankcase.
                            For heavy throttle, WOT, the connection between the CCV and the intake secure enough suction

                            Additionally for supercharged S54, this mechanism needs to either go away or get protected by a one way valve between the air rail and the valve to prevent boost from seeping into the crankcase (not a lot of boost can go there since the valve is still pulsating and modulating the pressure allowed to travel in both directions)

                              I have a late-model S54 with 11157834056 late-model valve-equipped breather hose and 13417834068 late-model air rail, and have run a CSL airbox on both MSS54 with Evolve tune and MSS54HP converted to CSL spec and running CSL software, and can confirm that the breather valve presence does create a post-ICV vacuum leak. An MSS54 with Evolve tune or MSS54HP with CSL software is unaware of the valve, and the valve sits in a open state when unasserted/unutilized, allowing the motor to inhale air post-ICV that the DME cannot keep up with.

                              The result is a surging, rough idle, misfires, and sometimes EML and related codes during open-loop operation shortly after both cold and warm start, before the O2 sensors have warmed enough to be useful and enable closed-loop operation to catch the excess air and compensate with more fuel. And if running Alpha-N only, sharp throttle cuts occur upon rapid throttle input increases as excess air is pulled in from the crankcase through the permanently-open valve.

                              The valve needs to be eliminated and the airflow path between the CCV port and the air rail closed by installing the OE CSL or an OE CSL-style hose, which is a straight run between the CCV port and airbox plenum. Then either plug the nipple on your late-model 13417834068 air rail or swap in the early-model 3547831481 air rail that does not have the nipple.

                              It is perfectly fine to run a catch can if you like. Just make sure the flow path is exclusively from CCV port to catch can to intake plenum, with no breather hose Y-junction in the mix.

                                Hmm, I ran with the original air rail,11157834056 CCV hose and my MSS54HP flashed with CSL Bootloader 32500 without issues for a few months prior to getting the Mullet Tune on my 2004 Vert. I have since switched to the CSL CCV hose and plugged the air rail with a vacuum cap.
