Went for a drive, lost power and now car exhaust sounds like it has cams

Hmm, drove the car today and was fine until towards the end of my drive. Wanted to have my friend hear my new CSL intake roar and made a couple of short sprint runs and was fine. Then all of a sudden car felt like it lost all power and the idle felt really rough. No lights on the dash. Ran it through my diagnostic software and I got the faults in the screenshots attached. Felt like a vacuum leak, but now that it says Camshaft timing over advanced or system performance and misfires on all cylinders, not sure what it is. ugh.

Doesn't sound like a blown motor or anythign too, just a rough idle.

Only thing that I did recently was get the CSL intake with Alpha N tune. Thoughts?

Hmm after a little research, it sounds like it may be vanos related? Maybe a solenoid pack? I just had my vanos done a couple of months ago. I'll need to contact them, maybe get the car towed there. ugh.

This forum thread actually is exactly what my symptoms are: https://www.e46fanatics.com/threads/...e-pics.358494/

i hope it’s just the two CPS.

I bet it's the VANOS solenoid pack. The rebuilt ones seem to fail more often than the CPSs.

Run the VANOS test if you have DIS.

If not, unplug the solenoid pack to see if the sound changes.

Unlikely that both cam sensors fail. I would guess 9/10 this is not your problem. Check if vanos solenoid plug is still attached (connector clips break very often, secure it with a zip tie). Also possible that solenoid pack has broken soldering joints inside or both broken vanos tabs can also cause same faults.

if you have dis, make vanos test. If only inpa, check at least target and actual cam position.

OP - if you don't have DIS you can do a full VANOS test by using the tst file and instructions on this post: https://nam3forum.com/forums/forum/s...5697#post35697 to do it with Tool32.

Definitely do the VANOS test as others are suggesting.

Make sure nothing is interfering with throttle body opening/closing. Will go into limp mode, but it doesn't seem like I had those codes when that happened to me. I had removed and re-installed my intake and after one of my intake clamps was interfering with the mechanism to open/close.

I had a similar issue after doing work on some of the relays in the ECU box. I had loosened one of the main ground wires and the VANOS solenoid pack had a floating ground.

                See:

UPDATE: Fixed the issue. It was loose ground connector in the e-box. If you experience sudden VANOS codes along with oil level sensor failure check your grounds! Specifically X6053. Went out to move the car today. The last few cold starts it was hard to start, would have to crank it twice. Today the SES light came on and it

Tried to do it but not sure if it worked properly? Does the car need to be on when running this? Not sure if the computer is really connected to the car. See the results:

Yes the car needs to be running (Vanos system relies on oil pressure to operate) and computer connected. Use INPA first to verify connectivity. This is just a different way of running the same series of tests DIS does, so read up on the DIS VANOS test process and that will give you your list of pre-reqs. (As far as I can remember it's just that the car is running and the interface is connected. Edit: as elrichmeister notes in their post below the engine also needs to be up to operating temperature - e.g. oil up to temp). You'll know it's working because the sound of the idle will change as it advances and retards the cams.

For the Tool32 VANOS test i think the car needs to be at operating temp. When i tested mine i did some spirited driving then, let it idle and ran the test.

Ah good call! Yes that's right. I'll amend my post as well for anyone in the future reading this.

Thanks guys. Question. Should I clear the codes and try driving around in order to get my car up to temp? It was running pretty rough last night and I haven’t started it back up again.

Only you can decide based on what you're hearing and what you think the risk is. If it was me in your position I'd try to rule out serious causes first, and also check things like the connectors others have mentioned first.

I'll get working on the test a little later today. I pulled theses codes via INPA and now I will try and clear it so I can go for a quick drive to get the car up to temp.

its crazy how much more detailed this is compared to the codes I pulled off of my iphone. only if i understood it all haha.
